Foreword

Before you read this short book, you must ask yourself if you really want to quit smoking. If, like almost every honest smoker I have met, the answer is yes then this little book is for you.
Unlike other works of wisdom on the subject of quitting nicotine addiction, The Cold Turkey Chronicles came about by complete accident. There was no plan or great desire to inspire others, but the book was born simply from my own frantic efforts to finally stub out my last cigarette and free myself of the deadly weed once and for all.
Having been a heavy smoker for more years than I care to mention, I had attempted to quit countless times and tried as many different methods as there are cigarette brands.
Each failed attempt added to the difficulty of the next as deep down I began to think that failure was inevitable.
Well, I can tell you now that it is not only possible to quit smoking, but it is actually quite simple once you know how. I will even go one step further and tell you that the quitting journey can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding adventures you will ever embark on.
One New Year’s Eve, as I was preparing myself for the approaching drudgery of yet another attempt to leave cigarettes in the dying year where they belonged, I was struck by what I can only describe as a revelation. I suddenly realised that if anyone could call himself an expert on the subject of quitting, it was me. I had quit cigarettes and subsequently quit quitting so many times previously that I could easily map out each bump in the road to freedom and knew each pothole to be avoided.
I suddenly saw nicotine addiction as my adversary, and like any adversary, it used a variety of devious tactics to conquer its opponents. I realised that my experience provided me with a tactical advantage and that with the right preparation, none of my opponent’s trickery could catch me off guard. The way forward, I decided, was to document my daily progress, relating it to that of past endeavours and by so doing I could clearly map out the route to success.
Quitting smoking is an adventure. It is a quest that will take you on a worthwhile journey – or perhaps it is more apt to refer to it as an expedition. The quest is to conquer your enemy and rid yourself of its tyranny forever. Like any explorer who has ever undertaken an expedition, you will experience some hardship along the way as the demon of nicotine addiction will try numerous tactics to derail your efforts. How much hardship you experience will depend on how prepared you are. The good news is that, unlike an explorer, you are not entering unchartered territory. This little book will guide you along the way and forewarn you of the pitfalls in the road. It will prepare you for the arsenal of deceitful and underhanded tactics available to your opponent and help you avoid falling prey to them.
I guarantee that besides a few tough times there will also be many moments of true elation and a fantastic sense of achievement. Each milestone passed along the way will remind you of just how far you’ve come and why you have accepted the challenge.
Are you ready? Have you prepared yourself mentally for the big day – the day that you set off on your quest to kill the fiery-eyed demon that has tormented you for so long?
The more prepared you are for your quest the easier it will be. It is very important to build up sufficient determination. Your drive and determination to quit is similar to pushing yourself away from the swimming pool wall with your feet. The harder you push, the further you will glide effortlessly through the water. Similarly, in quitting, your conviction and enthusiasm will give you the momentum you need to get through the first hours and days with minimum effort.
