Description

Figuring It Out walks you through identifying and cultivating the habits you need to shift or create to balance the eight major areas of life.
We humans learn by doing. With the right tools for doing what you need to do, including the questions you need to ask, you can make real change in your life. All you need is an open mind, a way to listen to MP3s, and something to write with.
Figuring It Out is an interactive and highly experiential guide to self-improvement, built on the reality that there’s no one-size-fits-all program when it comes to human transformation. Each person must reflect and reach individual conclusions about what to work on and how to work on it. Using the same process she uses in her practice, author Laura King presents a method for figuring out what’s working and what needs improvement in the eight areas that have been the most important to her clients for decades: family, fun and happiness, health, purpose and meaning, lifelong learning, relationships, finances, and position in life and career. She demonstrates how to use a combination of the power of the mind and the science of habit to create consistent improvements that balance out your Wheel of Life.
This self-improvement guide walks you through identifying and cultivating the habits you need to shift or create to balance the eight major areas of life.

For my family, especially Ed,
and for my clients and friends who’ve
trusted me with helping them
figure out how to create a more balanced life.

Congratulations on taking your first step in Figuring It Out!
For over two decades, I’ve been coaching Olympic athletes, titans of industry, and moms looking to reinvent themselves. I sit with them, and I listen to their stories. I get a feel for their needs, their context, and their history. And then I hypnotize them and give them work to do between our sessions—including self-hypnosis—that will help them be their best and feel their best.
I can only see a finite number of people, which I sometimes find frustrating. I want everyone to be able to reap the benefits of this vital work. My dedication to making that happen led me to create this interactive book and its accompanying downloads that can be found at www.laurakinghypnosis.com/downloads . The mp3 tracks on that page are an important part of this work, as they contain the exact words I would use if you were a client of mine.
My intention was to have us work together in a way that’s as close as possible to you coming to my office. If the Covid pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that there are all kinds of ways for us to relate that don’t involve being in person.
This journey we are embarking on is about achieving the kind of balance that seems elusive these days—balancing the EIGHT aspects of what I call The Wheel of Life. The Wheel didn’t come from me; it came from my clients. It’s composed of the areas my clients have told me, time and time again, are the most essential parts of their lives to get right. Like any wheel, it needs to be even in its construction; it needs to be balanced. That’s what this book is about.
How To Use This Book
Well, first, enjoy it. Make it your own! Draw on it, put stickers on it, and use it as a diary! I won’t say: Pick a spot in your home and a time of day and make a practice of writing in it daily . Instead, I’ll say:
Do what makes you happy and engaged!
Find your time and space that allow your unique thoughts and feelings to flow!
The only rule to follow is consistency. We tend to do more of the things that make us happy and that bring us success. So the key is finding your way to consistency and happiness, and for that I recommend a before-I-go-to-bed mindset for the first 30 days.
Before you go to bed each night for those 30 days, you’ll read or do whatever Figuring It Out exercises you have scheduled. No matter how miserable or tired or resistant you feel, you’re going to commit to doing them. Practice makes progress, and the progress here is the developing of healthy habits of mind and body.
The Structure of the Book

Sometimes clients want to know The How of my work with them. They want to know the principles that drive what we do and how they explain why our work is so effective. I use a combination of hypnosis and neuro-linguistic programming, and weave in universal laws I’ve found helpful. Part 1 contains this information, in addition to an explanation of emotional intelligence. This information sets the stage for the discovery I’ll guide you through in Part 2.
As for Part 2 , I ask you to read it with a curious attitude and without judgment. We are, after all, exploring your life as it is right now. We’re not trying to figure out what’s wrong with you and list all your bad decisions and mistakes. Our intention is simply to objectively note where you are, where you want to be, and bridge the two with a solid, achievable plan. You’ll make a roadmap to where you want to be, and the tracks you can find at www.laurakinghypnosis.com/downloads will strengthen your commitment and mindset to help you craft the best you possible! There’s room in the final chapter for compiling your mission statements and reflecting on the process and writing a letter to yourself.
I look forward to this journey of ours . . .
Warmly,
Laura

Hypnosis: The Short Version
No matter how many years I’ve spent hypnotizing people, the questions don’t really change. On some level, we are all unique individuals. But on another level, we’re all human beings with the same concerns. Here are the most common concerns and the responses that satisfy almost everyone. If you’re one of those people who can’t get enough information, there’s a thorough treatment of the questions in my general book Perfect Enough, as well as in my specialty books (e.g., The Power to Win for equestrians, Awesome Tennis, etc.).
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I hypnotizable?
Anyone of average intelligence can be hypnotized, and you can only be hypnotized if you want to be and you willingly follow the hypnotist’s instructions. There are definitely people who are more or less hypnotizable than average; it’s a spectrum. The same is true for willingness. Some people are hypnotizable but not willing. Both need to be present. Most people fall right in the middle of willingness once they understand what hypnosis is about and they realize it’s safe and it’s going to help them. They comfortably go into a state of relaxation and hypnosis, and they’re receptive to the hypnotist’s suggestions.
As your hypnotist, I’m your guide. If you choose to follow my instructions, you’ll be guided into a wonderful, relaxed state of focus and awareness. And afterwards, you’ll remember everything that happened.
What’s happening in my brain when I get hypnotized?
Neuroscientists have yet to figure out exactly why hypnosis works. If there’s a mechanism in the brain that magically unlocks the subconscious mind, it remains elusive. One mechanism we do know is involved in hypnosis is the brain wave. The brain has five types of waves (gamma, beta, alpha, theta, and delta) that dictate how we feel, how we behave (including how quick our brains are), and how we perform. The brain’s waves tell us whether we’re awake or asleep.
The hypnotic state takes your brain from beta, which it’s probably in right now (gamma is more like a highly attentive state of consciousness that most people aren’t ordinarily in during waking hours), to either the alpha state or the theta state (delta is when you are in a deep sleep), depending on how deeply you need to go for what you’d like to achieve. For the hypnosis tracks that are part of Figuring It Out ( www.laurakinghypnosis.com/downloads ), you’ll likely be in theta state. In other words, hypnosis takes you to a place of focused, relaxed awareness.
What will I feel like when I’m being hypnotized?
I can’t say for sure, as everyone is different. Some people tell me they don’t feel any different. Others report feeling relaxed and heavy, like a lead weight. And then there are the lucky ones who feel like they’re floating on a cloud, feeling better than ever before.
How is hypnosis different from meditation?
The goal of hypnosis is to get you to a place where you can change your behavior through my direct suggestion (or through yours, as in the case of self-hypnosis). Though there are myriad different types of meditation, the goal is usually the quieting of the mind, a concentration on a specific state (e.g., compassion, forgiveness, love, death), or relaxation of the entire being.
