ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
F irst off, I would like to thank God for giving me the time to work on this book. I was not motivated all the time. I felt like I was not worthy enough to send a message. But what pushed me was my faith and consistency. Secondly, my family. My parents Walter and Monica Givens have supported me through every pursuit. My brother Philip kept me entertained for years and still does today. To my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, I love you all. Your relative is an author. To my friends from the Wichita Northwest class of 2020, I hope you are all doing well, chasing your dreams. I have also been blessed from the beginning with amazing coaches that showed me how to be a light in the community. Coach Marvin, thank you for introducing me to the game of football. To my high school coaching staff, I appreciate everything you did for me during my four years. For my readers, thank you again for picking up this book. You spent a portion of your time reading this and I am grateful for you. When I first started writing, I had no idea who my audience would be. It turns out, that this is not only for people in my age group and older. This is a message to my younger self too. I spent weeks feeling like this book would fail to reach people. Like I said in the beginning if this helped one person, I would be satisfied. This is my contribution to the community. I want to thank the people at Balboa Press for allowing me to share my vision and turn my idea into a reality. In conclusion, I want you, wherever you are in life, to make a change. I want you to become the best version of yourself. The days will not always be peaceful, but you become stronger by continuing. So continue. Grow in discomfort.
INTRODUCTION
H ow fast is life moving for you? Are you living in a constant state of worry or panic? Are you tossing and turning trying to find comfort in this life? Let me be the first or millionth to tell you not to worry. Easier said than done right? As humans, we naturally gravitate towards what is comfortable. If we face opposition, there is a voice in our heads telling us to quit. Instant gratification is the bandaid that we place on our scarred life in need of stitches. We look for validation outside our respective groups to make a move. Some of us had faith in people that hurt us. Maybe you used pain to propel you. Others might have pushed the pain deep down until it bubbles up like throwing mentos in Diet Coke. If you are in a season of climbing mountain after mountain, congratulations. The obstacles have a purpose, and maybe you have no idea what that purpose is. If you picked up this book, you are curious and searching for something meaningful. As a self-aware individual, you possess the hunger to add value to your environment. But what do you want to accomplish? Who are you right now, and who are you trying to be in the future? Hopefully, you do not feel trapped in an interrogation room as you read through these questions. Keep these in mind as you continue.
If you don’t know who I am, my name is Jared Givens. I was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas. I graduated from Northwest High School in 2020. Yes, the year 2020. I got the idea of writing a book while in quarantine during my first year of college. Fortunately, I tested negative but my roommate tested positive. He was asymptomatic. This is not a book about coronavirus. Everyone has their opinions on it and that is not the message I am trying to convey. However, I am aware that I was not the only one that has changed since then. After months of uncertainty, I created routines that allowed me to get better physically, mentally, and spiritually. On July 1, 2021, I bought a journal from Walmart, and a couple of pens, and started writing consistently. I found that journaling helped me collect my thoughts, positive and negative. I set aside time to write. For the days I felt like nothing was going right, I practiced gratitude. This allowed me to check myself daily. Identifying the lacking areas in your life is not an exciting task. You might feel like you have done nothing but sabotage yourself. At the very least, you know what you need to work on. The crazy part is, that you are closer than you think. In the simplest of terms, your dream requires a large amount of time and energy. But it does not all have to be done at one time. The mistake is thinking that all work and no relaxation will produce instant results. Unfortunately, the distractions are growing each day. It seems like there is a new form of entertainment that stands in the way of our progress as dream chasers. The outside forces are not in our favor. Writing this book has been on my mind for well over a year now. I am not your typical author. I am fairly young but old enough to acknowledge everything that happens around me. Through years of playing sports and working with others, I felt like I needed to add value. If this book only reaches one person, then I will not be discouraged because that one person can make a huge difference.
Wherever you are in life, there is at least one thing you can improve upon. If you believe you have it all together and need no assistance, then you would not seek help or build relationships. You would go on about your day and never look back. As this world changes, we must change. I am not saying we become like the world, rather we become the best version of ourselves. Of course, that is different for everyone. We are not meant to live a life of misery, full of dark days. Will you have to live through dark times? Yes! The great part about that is everyone faces challenges on their journey. Contrary to what you might think, you are not alone. I wrote this book for those that feel isolated. It is hard to chase your purpose when countless activities are starving for your attention. In this book, you will gain knowledge about methods you can use on your path to greatness. To get to that next level you need a plan. If no one else sees what you see, you must keep your vision alive. You don’t have to be understood to accomplish great things. The people close to you don’t need to know your next move. Life will knock you down and continue to test you. When you take calculated risks you are already further than those who are not trying. Before you finish this book, I would like to say I appreciate the time you took to pick this up. Imagine what your life will look like if you apply just a few principles from this book. The truth is, you can read all the books in the world and not work to change your circumstances. You can watch all the videos that provide the steps to reach your goals but if you do nothing, you are just spinning your wheels. Get up and look in the mirror. Smile. You are alive today. You have a purpose. If you are willing to put in the work and keep an open mind, then you are ready. Picture your younger self looking at you. Make that person proud. So take notes, and read this by yourself, or with others. Let this not be an assignment, but a stepping stone for
