About the Author

Life is all about choices...

Choices are the actions that you implement. They are determined by two things: attitude and belief. The strength of your beliefs and the disposition of your attitude are influenced by nine distinct tools. Each of these tools will be discussed in this book. Once you realize how these tools affect your attitude and beliefs, and learn how to develop them, you can and will have the ability to make better choices. And, if you make better choices, your life will improve. After all, everything you are and what you stand for right now has been determined by the choices that you have made to this point. Similarly, who you become from this moment on is controlled by the choices you implement from this second forward. Do not dwell in the past. Live for this moment. You have the ability to determine how happy and successful you are. It just depends on the choices you make.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I have many people to thank for their encouragement and support. I would never have been able to begin this endeavor without their assistance and their belief in me.
This book is dedicated to my parents for giving me the basis to establish a strong foundation. That is- love, support, encouragement, safety and a chance. Thank you both.
It is also dedicated to my teacher, Master Hidy Ochiai, for all that he has instilled in me. He has given me more than I can explain. Most importantly, he has given me a strong sense of self. Thank you, Sensei.
I wish to thank my first karate instructor, Mr. John Perricone. It was his sincerity, dedication, and commitment that inspired me to begin my journey in the martial arts. Mr. Perricone is a fantastic teacher, an inspirational person, and quite a remarkable human being. Thank you, sir.
To all of my fellow students in Washin-Ryu who have helped me throughout the years, thank you for helping me find my way.
This book is dedicated to my wife. She has given me more support, guidance, and friendship than I deserve. She has been hearing about this idea for a book for over 15 years and has managed not only to give me the freedom to pursue this goal of mine, but has also been encouraging every step of the way. She has made a lot of sacrifices for me and I owe her everything.
This book is dedicated to my children. They are my life’s 3 greatest gifts, and their births provided me with my life’s 3 greatest moments-by far. Jake, Mac, and Katelyn continue to inspire me, serve as my source of energy, and provide me with laughter and unconditional love, a feeling that has no equal.
A special thanks to my friend Jack Jones who unbelievably was able to take 15 years of my random thoughts and notes, and organize them into this piece of work that follows. That was no easy undertaking. Without Jack’s commitment and organizational skills, this book would never have come to fruition. Thank you Jack for helping me make my dream a reality. How would this have turned out if I would have put it together all on my own? “Not very well.”
To every person in my life who has ever believed in me, your energy has inspired me. That inspiration helped motivate me to write this book. Thank you.
And last but not least, this book is dedicated to the memories that I have of my grandfather. He had a strong influence on my Foundation. He taught me the value of hard work and the importance of taking care of family. Plus, he was a really cool guy.
DISCLAIMERS
1. Although this book presents the tools that I have learned as a result of my martial arts training, the book has not been reviewed or endorsed by anyone. This is merely my interpretation of what I have learned over the years.
2. When I refer to my teacher throughout this book, I am referring to Master Hidy Ochiai, as he is the only teacher (Sensei) of Washin Ryu Karate Do and my only teacher of the martial arts.
3. When I refer to my instructor throughout this book, I am referring to Mr. John Perricone. Mr. Perricone led the classes at Cortland as a representative of Master Hidy Ochiai. He always did his best to build a bridge between what Master Ochiai had imparted to him and the students at SUNY Cortland. He was very clear with us that he was not a Sensei, but simply a dedicated student who wanted to share with others an art that had so deeply enriched his life. He encouraged us to visit headquarters routinely, so that we too could learn from our teacher, Master Ochiai.
4. While I am the sole author of this book, and I do refer to the martial arts concepts that I learned through years of training, I am in no way representing myself as a teacher of or expert in the martial arts. I have tremendous respect and gratitude for my teacher, Master Hidy Ochiai. I am and will forever be his indebted student.
5. At Master Ochiai’s direction, I served as the instructor of a branch of Washin-Ryu on Long Island for 5 years.
PREFACE
This is not a book about martial arts. It is a book that will teach you how to apply the lessons of the martial arts to your everyday life. Moreover, this book is about each individual’s ability to empower themselves to make wise choices and to take full responsibility for where they have been, where they are now, and where they will go in life. The goal of writing this book is to give you the concepts and tools to succeed in whatever endeavor you choose, whether it’s advancing your career, developing better relationships, becoming a better parent, creating healthy habits, managing your finances, or any other pursuit that is important to you.
Again, this is not a martial arts manual. You will not be taught any kicks or punches. Nor is reading this book a substitute for martial arts training. However, I acquired the principles and tools that are discussed in this book through many years of martial arts training. Do you need to have at least some martial arts training in order to learn and use these principles and tools? Absolutely not! What you do need to understand is that these tools exist, they are crucial components to self-improvement, and you can use them right now to improve your life. The choice is yours. And life is all about choices.
This book will identify each of these nine tools. You will then learn how each tool affects your attitude, beliefs and choices. Finally, you will be taught how to develop and subsequently implement these tools in your daily life. Now, you might be asking yourself, “If I’ve never taken a karate class and have had no interest in doing so, why read this book?” Actually, if you have zero or little knowledge of martial arts, you will be fine. The martial arts stories contained in this book, will simply serve as a way to point out how I dev
