PREFACE
About This Book
Various statistics show that approximately 70 million people in the United States suffer from chronic sleep problems. Lack of sleep is associated with injuries, chronic diseases, mental illnesses, poor quality of life and well-being, increased health-care costs, and lost work productivity. According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than two-thirds of U.S. high school students report getting less than eight hours of sleep on school nights. Short sleep duration (<8 hours) is lowest among ninth graders and highest among twelfth graders. According to the survey conducted by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), adults who got inadequate sleep (<7 hours of sleep per 24-hour period) were more likely to report 10 chronic health conditions, including being obese, physically inactive, and smokers, when compared to people who got enough sleep.
Sleep Health Information for Teens, Third Edition provides basic consumer information about sleep, the link between sleep and health, various sleep habits, common sleep disorders, and their symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatments. It also includes information on how everyday life habits affect sleep and the consequences of sleep deprivation. The book concludes with a list of resources for additional help and information.
How to Use This Book
This book is divided into parts and chapters. Parts focus on broad areas of interest; chapters are devoted to single topics within a part.
Part 1: Understanding Sleep explains the biology of sleep, its stages and mechanisms, and the relationship of sleep with dreams, learning, and memory consolidation. It also describes the circadian rhythm, the importance of sleep in flushing out brain toxins, and the facts and misperceptions about sleep.
Part 2: The Link between Sleep and Overall Health talks about the various health challenges linked to sleep. The health issues include nocturia, weight gain, high blood pressure, bruxism, restless legs syndrome (RLS), and so on. This part also explains the importance of sleep and the benefits of slumber, napping, and exercise.
Part 3: Modern Life and Sleep Issues discusses the various lifestyle practices among teens that impact sleep, such as substance use, irregular work schedules, traveling across time zones, excessive screen time, and, most importantly, the intake of caffeine and alcohol.
Part 4: The Consequences of Sleep Deprivation offers information on the impacts and consequences of sleep deprivation that includes drowsy driving, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and posttraumatic stress disorder. It also explains how sleep affects sports performance, the importance of sleep in building relational memory, and the adequate amount of sleep required.
Part 5: Common Sleep Disorders: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment explains in detail the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment of the most common sleep disorders and related problems such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, night terrors, idiopathic hypersomnia, Kleine-Levin syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, night eating syndrome, and so on. It also provides information on diagnosing sleep disorders, discussing sleep-related issues with doctors, and sleep education for parents, schools, and health professionals.
Part 6: If You Need More Information includes suggestions for further reading about sleep along with a directory of resources for additional information about sleep and its related disorders.
