Sample Book Insights:
#1 Brain Body Tools are strategies for helping kids to gain confidence, relaxation, and self-awareness. They help kids by teaching them how to sense and be kind to others, as well as how information comes to them through both the body and mind.
#2 There is concern that children are losing touch with the world around them, as they spend more time with screens. They are not getting enough conversation with adults and one another, and they are not getting enough physical activity, embodied learning, and sensory experiences.
#3 The smart board is a dynamic tool for therapy that can be used to display websites, images, and videos. It provides classrooms with opportunities for interactive learning. I have worked with autistic children using the smart board to engage with a yoga DVD.
#4 The threefold experience of yoga is slow movements that release tension and are calming for the mind, Pranayama breathing that is regulating by tapping into the parasympathetic nervous system, and asanas that are focusing.

#2

There is concern that children are losing touch with the world around them, as they spend more time with screens. They are not getting enough conversation with adults and one another, and they are not getting enough physical activity, embodied learning, and sensory experiences.

#3

The smart board is a dynamic tool for therapy that can be used to display websites, images, and videos. It provides classrooms with opportunities for interactive learning. I have worked with autistic children using the smart board to engage with a yoga DVD.

#4

The threefold experience of yoga is slow movements that release tension and are calming for the mind, Pranayama breathing that is regulating by tapping into the parasympathetic nervous system, and asanas that are focusing.

#5

The body is made up of different systems that work together to keep us alive. The heart, for example, can support in a back bend. The sphinx pose is a chest and heart opening pose, and the upper extremities are weight bearing into the hands and forearms in a push pattern.

#6

The heart is the center of the universe, and the green light beam is a symbol of love. When you are in a stressful situation, imagine sending the green heart ray there like a gentle rain or a fire hose.

#7

The Cobbler pose is a restful position for a sensory corner. It is an easy and comfortable way to have the body supported and to feel immediate rest and rejuvenation. It can be done in a half-sit and half-lie position with the sacrum at the edge of the bolster on the mat.

#8

The ancient yoga teachers understood the importance of the tactile sense in mood management. They recognized that the fingertips have many significant nerve endings, and that positioning the hands and the fingers could impact moods for energizing or calming.

#9

As an OT working with kids with sensory issues, keeping postures simple and allowing students to become acclimated over time has worked best for me. I have included certain postures that have worked for particular children on my caseload.

#10

Back-to-back breathing is a body mind centering technique that helps you distinguish the right and left lobes of your lungs, the layering of the body systems, and the awareness of the cells.

#11

Adapt this pose for a multi-handicapped child or adolescent by setting up in a side lie position. Placing the student’s back to your front body, allow the child to lean into you (yield). Or, you can sit and lean back into a bean bag chair, secured ball or a wall with the student’s back body positioned to lean back into the therapist’s front body, sitting between the therapist’s legs.

#12

Hatha yoga is the name given to effort to do the physical poses. Ha also mean sun and tha means moon, and it means the unity of the sun and moon or the universe. The definition of Vinyasa is linking body movement with breath to form a continuous flow.

#13

Restorative poses are a self-calming activity that can be used by children who are over-responsive and react too easily to stimuli. They can be added to a therapist’s toolbox.

#14

A sensory corner is a quiet and secluded area in a classroom or home for a child to relax and minimize extra stimulation. It can be portioned off with furniture, a small tent, a screen or a specified place.

#15

A simple pose that requires no equipment is legs up against the wall where you lie supine on the mat and place your legs at 90 degrees against the wall. Another simple pose that can be done in a classroom is having a child stack their fists one on top of the other and rest their head on their fists.
