Insights from Chapter 1

#1

Being a gentleman is not about following a bunch of rules. It’s about having a profound respect for yourself and others. By following the simple tips in this chapter, any ruffian can turn into a proper gentleman.

#2

Dressing like a gentleman will boost your own confidence and win you the respect of others. Your appearance matters, and dressing like a gentleman will boost your chances of success.

#3

A good suit is a man’s best wardrobe addition. A man should have at least one good suit that he can wear to job interviews, weddings, and special occasions. However, choosing a suit is not like choosing a T-shirt and a pair of jeans.

#4

The most important area to check for fit is in the shoulder or yoke area of the jacket. The shoulder and upper back area should lie flat along your body. Make sure the armholes are comfortable.

#5

Check the fit of the suit jacket. It should drape comfortably and freely on the front of your body, not be so tight that you look like a twelve-year-old borrowing your dad’s suit, and should cover your butt completely.

#6

The break in your trouser is where your pant’s hem falls on your shoes. If your break is too high, you'll look like Steve Urkel. If it's too low, your pants will swallow your dew beaters. You have three options for where the break is on your pant: the full break, the medium break, and no break.

#7

The full break: The bottom of the hem covers the heel of the shoe. This option provides a much longer covering, keeping the pants from exposing one’s socks when walking. The medium break: The bottom of the hem falls in the middle of the heel of the shoe. It provides less covering for the sock when walking but keeps the fabric further away from the floor and reduces the chance of tripping.

#8

The pocket square is experiencing a renaissance, and for good reason. They are an easy and inexpensive way to vary the look of the same suit. Pocket squares add some visual interest and flair to your appearance.

#9

A pocket square is an essential part of a man’s suit collection. It can be patterned or solid, and should complement some color on your tie. Avoid matching the colors exactly, as it looks like you’re trying too hard.

#10

To fold a corner pocket square, lay it on a flat surface with one corner facing up and one corner facing down so it looks like you have a baseball diamond in front of you. Bring the bottom point to the top point so that you create a triangle.

#11

The Windsor knot is a wide triangular knot that’s good for more formal settings. It is best worn with a wide spread collar.

#12

The Half Windsor knot is similar to the Windsor knot, but it is not as large. It is appropriate for lighter fabrics and wider ties. It is best worn with a standard collar.

#13

The schoolboy knot is the easiest to tie and looks best with smaller spread collars. It’s a good knot to use if your tie is made of heavier material.

#14

The hat is the final piece of clothing that should be worn by a gentleman. Hats are both functional and fashionable. They can hide a bad hair day, cover a bald spot, keep your head warm, and shade your eyes from the sun.

#15

Hats can give you a feeling of effortless cool and manly confidence. Wearing your hat to reflect your mood is easy: push it back to seem more open and accessible, tilt it over your eyes to seem mysterious and intimidating, and tilt it up 1 inch from completely straight to project an all-business attitude.

#16

The hat is a singular accessory that can be used to convey respect. It should always be removed in the same places and manners as listed above.

#17

What we find attractive is largely based on symmetry. The more symmetrical a face is, the more appealing it appears to others. But there is nothing we can do to change the symmetry of our faces short of surgery.

#18

The shapes of your face determine which hats will look best on you. For example, a round face looks short, so you want a hat that will give you a little height.

#19

To iron, fill the iron with water and set it to the appropriate temperature. Different fabrics require different iron temperatures. If the iron is too hot or steamy, you’ll ruin the fabric.

#20

To get the best result when ironing, follow this order: collar, yoke, cuffs, sleeves, back, front panels, retouch if needed.

#21

To get the best results, you must iron your pants in this order: waistband, pockets, fly area, seams and hems, then the outer and inner seams. Line up the pants legs on top of each other and iron the outside of the top leg.

#22

To shine your shoes, you will need a cloth, shoe polish, and a shoe brush. First, brush off any dirt or mud on your shoes. Then, wrap part of the cloth around your index finger. Moisten the cloth at the fingertip with a small amount of water. Rub your now-moist cloth in the polish to acquire a small amount. Apply the polish in small circles, in very small amounts.

#23

Socks should match your pants, not your shoes. Belt color should match your shoe color.

#24

Men have stopped going to barbershops, and this is a man travesty of the highest order. Barbers are interesting guys with fascinating stories to tell. They are also involved in the community, as many people go to talk with others while getting their hair cut.

#25

Barbershops are a great tradition to start with your father or son. They are simple experiences with no foo-foo accoutrements of the modern age. They just provide great haircuts and great conversation.

#26

Switching to a double-edged safety razor can save you money, as well as give you a better, more consistent shave.

#27

A safety razor is a machine. It’s nice to hold a piece of heavy, sturdy metal in your hand while you’re shaving, as opposed to a piece of cheap plastic. blades, brushes, soaps, and creams are all available to buy.

#28

Prep your beard by shaving right when you get out of the shower. Lather up with a small dollop of shave cream and a brush, then shave with the grain. Angle the blade as far away from your face as possible, and shave with as little pressure as possible.

#29

The goal of shaving is to reduce your beard gradually, not to remove it all in one stroke. If you want to avoid skin irritation, lather up and pass the razor over your face several times.

#30

After you have your bag, it’s time to fill it with the stuff you need to keep yourself well groomed while traveling. Most of these items are common sense, but you might not have thought of them.
