Sample Book Insights:
# I had responded to an advertisement for a live-in companion. I had lived on a tropical island for two years, and I wanted to live on an island. I had been working in the banking industry, and I needed to try an existence that released me from the Monday to Friday, nine to five grind.
#2 I had a great adventure, traveling on various buses and trains. I eventually landed on a beautiful island, where I worked as a dish-pig. I met a man from Europe who offered me a job at his printing company. I needed some like-minded friends, so I headed off to England.
#3 I had a bed and food, and was working as a pub worker in Surrey. I was not a drinker, and had become a non-drinker, but I was still out socializing every night. I wanted to travel, so I decided to leave the pub life and save money for the trip.
#4 There are many ways to help people with dementia, and one of them is to help them with their routine. Routine can be helpful for many people as they get older.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

I had responded to an advertisement for a live-in companion. I had lived on a tropical island for two years, and I wanted to live on an island. I had been working in the banking industry, and I needed to try an existence that released me from the Monday to Friday, nine to five grind.

#2

I had a great adventure, traveling on various buses and trains. I eventually landed on a beautiful island, where I worked as a dish-pig. I met a man from Europe who offered me a job at his printing company. I needed some like-minded friends, so I headed off to England.

#3

I had a bed and food, and was working as a pub worker in Surrey. I was not a drinker, and had become a non-drinker, but I was still out socializing every night. I wanted to travel, so I decided to leave the pub life and save money for the trip.

#4

There are many ways to help people with dementia, and one of them is to help them with their routine. Routine can be helpful for many people as they get older.

#5

I loved working with Agnes. She was always trying to buy me things, particularly things I didn’t need or want. I learned to edit how much information I gave her, as it could be dangerous otherwise.

#6

I was a vegetarian, and I lived on a cattle farm with my grandmother. I loved animals, and I noticed that cows mooed differently when they knew they were about to die. Their sounds of terror and panic still haunt me.

#7

I had accepted the job as a means to travel, but I enjoyed the companionship. I enjoyed helping people walk steady, rather than removing dirty ashtrays and empty pint glasses.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I had to acknowledge that I was an artist of sorts. I had always been creative, but had never really pursued it. I began developing my creative skills through writing and photography, which led to songwriting and performing.

#2

I was a vegetarian, and Dean was a meat eater. We had loved each other dearly for years, but our numerous lifestyle differences could no longer be swept under the carpet. I was determined to continue on my creative path, and so I began working as a live-in companion.

#3

I was able to do the job well for a new person. I treated Ruth as I would my own grandmother, and she was pleased because I was spoiling her rotten. I was enjoying our friendship, except for hearing about what cups and saucers they had used at dinner parties when they were young.

#4

The modern society I was living in, Western culture, was not one that exposed its people to dying bodies on a regular basis. We were trying to hide death, as if we were trying to convince ourselves that out of sight, out of mind really works.

#5

I came to understand how detrimental denial is in our society. I had never seen a dead person, let alone cared for someone towards their passing, but I was told that the family loved me and that I would be fine.

#6

I was with my cousin in the bush when my employer called and asked if I could come back to the house.
