Sample Book Insights:
#1 The first layer that needs to be removed to get to a clean house is clutter. It is not possible to clean a surface or room that is piled with stuff. The second layer is daily stuff, and certain tasks need to be done every day or almost every day.
#2 Your Clutter Threshold is the amount of stuff you can easily keep under control in your own home. If your house is constantly falling back into disaster status, you have too much stuff.
#3 The goal of decluttering your house is not to finish, but to have less stuff than you did before. Focusing on having less and making your home better is what finally brought about real change in your home.
#4 When I started my deslobification process, I thought I was giving up when I decided organizing was hopeless for me. But instead of focusing on how to keep my stuff, I focused on getting it out of my house.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The first layer that needs to be removed to get to a clean house is clutter. It is not possible to clean a surface or room that is piled with stuff. The second layer is daily stuff, and certain tasks need to be done every day or almost every day.

#2

Your Clutter Threshold is the amount of stuff you can easily keep under control in your own home. If your house is constantly falling back into disaster status, you have too much stuff.

#3

The goal of decluttering your house is not to finish, but to have less stuff than you did before. Focusing on having less and making your home better is what finally brought about real change in your home.

#4

When I started my deslobification process, I thought I was giving up when I decided organizing was hopeless for me. But instead of focusing on how to keep my stuff, I focused on getting it out of my house.

#5

The key to getting your house under control is the little stuff. The big secret is not top-to-bottom cleaning every weekend. It’s doing the dishes on Monday and then doing them again on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and even on Saturday and Sunday.

#6

The Visibility Rule states that you should start decluttering in the most visible area of your home. If you work on a visible space, you will see the results of your decluttering effort. This will inspire you to continue decluttering more quickly.

#7

Procrasticlutter is the stuff that doesn’t seem like legitimate clutter, so it’s easy to put off dealing with it when you’re in the midst of a real decluttering project. But you’ll have to deal with it eventually, so you know you’ll do it eventually.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The core problem of Stuff Shifting is procrastinating on making decisions. You’re not actually decluttering if you’re just moving items from one room to another. Say no to Stuff Shifting.

#2

You should avoid using emotions to declutter. If you try to declutter based on how an item makes you feel, you will end up keeping all of it. Instead, use fact-based questions to remove emotions from your decluttering process.
