Insights from Chapter 1
#1
Stoicism is a philosophy that helps you deal with whatever stormy weather life throws at you. It will prepare you to deal with whatever stormy weather life throws at you.
#2
The Stoics were particularly concerned with applying philosophy to everyday life. They saw themselves as veritable warriors of the mind, and the primary reason to study philosophy was to put it into practice.
#3
Philosophy is a matter of little theory and a lot of practice. Like wrestling, it’s about going out there and applying what you’ve learned. Your life is the perfect training ground for daily practice.
#4
The Stoics believed that nature wants us to become that highest version of ourselves. To become good with your inner daimon, to live in harmony with your ideal self, and to express your highest version of yourself in every moment, is to get as close as possible to that high potential self.
#5
The Stoics believed that life was challenging, and that we should embrace it. We should train to deal with whatever life throws at us, because we want to be strong and live happy lives. We want to be able to act like our ideal self.
#6
The Stoic goal is to thrive as human beings, and they believed that it was impossible to flourish in life while being tormented by irrational emotions. We need to overcome these interfering emotions, and that’s what the word apathy means.
#7
The Stoics wanted to conquer their passions by becoming stronger than them, and not by eliminating them. They wanted to be useful, help others, and take care of themselves and others. They didn’t want to listen to the emotional wolf, and they didn’t follow along with its desires.
#8
The Stoics were not unemotional, but they did recognize that strong emotions were their weakness. They wanted to minimize the effects that strong emotions have on their lives, and they wanted to live as they were capable of.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
Stoicism was not born out of nowhere. Its founder, Zeno, and the early Stoics had been influenced by different philosophical schools and thinkers, especially by Socrates, the Cynics, and the Academics.
#2
Stoicism was one of the most influential and respected schools of philosophy for nearly five subsequent centuries. It was practiced by the rich and the poor, the powerful and the sufferer alike, in the pursuit of the good life. However, after the deaths of its famous teachers, Stoicism fell into a slump from which it has yet to recover.
