#1 The six warning signs of procrastination are: life feels like a long series of obligations that cannot be met, you are unrealistic about time, you are vague about your goals and values, you are unfulfilled, frustrated, and depressed, and you are indecisive and afraid of being criticized for making a mistake.
#2 Procrastination is a habit that can be extremely destructive to your life. It can lead to missed deadlines, lost sales, and broken relationships. It can also lead to anxiety, guilt, and deep regrets about life’s missed opportunities.
#3 The Now Habit is based on the Positive Psychology of Dr. Martin Seligman, who believes that humans have the ability to be positive and active. We only procrastinate when we fear a threat to our sense of worth and independence.
#4 The key fear that stems from over-identifying who you are with your work is the fear of judgment. From this fear follows the counterproductive drive toward perfectionism, severe self-criticism, and the fear that you must deprive yourself of leisure time in order to satisfy some unseen judge.

#1

The six warning signs of procrastination are: life feels like a long series of obligations that cannot be met, you are unrealistic about time, you are vague about your goals and values, you are unfulfilled, frustrated, and depressed, and you are indecisive and afraid of being criticized for making a mistake.

#2

Procrastination is a habit that can be extremely destructive to your life. It can lead to missed deadlines, lost sales, and broken relationships. It can also lead to anxiety, guilt, and deep regrets about life’s missed opportunities.

#3

The Now Habit is based on the Positive Psychology of Dr. Martin Seligman, who believes that humans have the ability to be positive and active. We only procrastinate when we fear a threat to our sense of worth and independence.

#4

The key fear that stems from over-identifying who you are with your work is the fear of judgment. From this fear follows the counterproductive drive toward perfectionism, severe self-criticism, and the fear that you must deprive yourself of leisure time in order to satisfy some unseen judge.

#5

Clare was a procrastinator who had been given a poor performance evaluation at her job. She had been procrastinating since grade school, and she knew that her difficulties with procrastination would always catch up with her.

#6

The typical pattern of procrastination is that people are praised when they finish a project, but they are always criticized when they don’t. They learn early on that all they can expect from finishing a project is criticism or so-called constructive feedback on how it might be improved.

#7

Clare’s training taught her that part of her was lazy, and that she would need to be disciplined and pressured to do all the hard work that awaited her. She learned to take for granted that a judgmental and authoritarian part of her would have to push and threaten a lazy and childlike part of her.

#8

Once Clare had redefined some basic premises about work and procrastination in her first session, she was able to identify the negative assumptions that underlay her procrastination. She then developed positive challenges to replace them and redirect her focus toward the task at hand rather than questions of her ability or worth.

#9

Procrastination is often a symptom of other problems. We are taught that procrastination is the problem, rather than a symptom of other problems. This diagnosis, instead of directing your efforts toward ending the cycle of pressure, fear, and procrastination, makes matters worse by blaming you for choosing such an awful habit.

#10

When we identify our worth with our work, we are naturally reluctant to face challenges and take risks. If you believe that a judgment of your work is a judgment of yourself, then perfectionism, self-criticism, and procrastination are necessary forms of protection.

#11

You can use procrastination to get even with powerful authorities who place you in situations where your alternatives all seem negative. By procrastinating, you temporarily dethrone this authority. You can resist by dragging your feet and giving a halfhearted effort.

#12

Self-empowerment and stopping the victim role are the hardest parts of applying the Now Habit tools for Larry. He decided to stay with his job until retirement, and he began to take more responsibility for it. He broke out of the habit of being a victim who just followed the boss’s orders.

#13

Perfectionism and self-criticism are the chief causes of fear of failure.
