Description

Sample Book Insights:
#1 An addiction is a compulsive reliance on any substance or activity that harms or deters your ability to function in a major area of your life such as work, school, family, social, and intimate relationships. The substance is used to regulate emotional states that would otherwise feel unbearable if you did not use it.
#2 The first step to recovery is to wake up emotionally and examine yourself and your daily rituals in a new way. You can overuse or abuse almost anything. An addiction is something that provides an escape, takes you out of yourself, and allows you to get further away from the painful feelings and emotions we would all prefer to avoid.
#3 The list is endless, and it is common for people to be addicted to several things at the same time. These include alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, illegal drugs, pornography, gambling, food, exercise, adventure sports, food and drinks that contain caffeine and other chemicals, technology, shopping, working, sex, and tattoos and body piercing.
#4 It can be difficult to tell whether your own habit is healthy, okay in moderation, or a self-destructive addiction that will only get worse. To find out, answer yes or no to the following forty questions. If the answer is maybe or sometimes, count that as a yes.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

An addiction is a compulsive reliance on any substance or activity that harms or deters your ability to function in a major area of your life such as work, school, family, social, and intimate relationships. The substance is used to regulate emotional states that would otherwise feel unbearable if you did not use it.

#2

The first step to recovery is to wake up emotionally and examine yourself and your daily rituals in a new way. You can overuse or abuse almost anything. An addiction is something that provides an escape, takes you out of yourself, and allows you to get further away from the painful feelings and emotions we would all prefer to avoid.

#3

The list is endless, and it is common for people to be addicted to several things at the same time. These include alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, illegal drugs, pornography, gambling, food, exercise, adventure sports, food and drinks that contain caffeine and other chemicals, technology, shopping, working, sex, and tattoos and body piercing.

#4

It can be difficult to tell whether your own habit is healthy, okay in moderation, or a self-destructive addiction that will only get worse. To find out, answer yes or no to the following forty questions. If the answer is maybe or sometimes, count that as a yes.

#5

If you have answered yes to more than five of the How to Tell If It’s an Addiction questions, your habit is on the way to becoming an addiction. It is already starting to negatively interfere with other areas of your life.

#6

Take inventory of your habits and activities. If you are so positive that your drinking, smoking, eating, gambling, shopping, or pornography isn’t a big deal, go seven days without it. If you feel fine, it might not be an addiction. On the other hand, if you cannot get out of bed or feel depressed, angry, anxious, scared, paranoid, or edgy without using, it is probably time to face your problem.

#7

To help you quit, try to attend an addiction group, ask your medical doctor for data on the damage you have done to your body due to your addiction, ask people you trust for their honest and discreet opinions on your addiction, and ask a former user if they think you have issues.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I had to work hard to connect with Stacey, who was extremely guarded and silent. She would not speak at all during her first four months of treatment with me, and she looked like she had no energy or will to live.

#2

I told Stacey about the shrinks who had treated and disappointed me in the past, what I’d learned from these failures, and how I wanted to provide my patients the help that therapy had failed to give to me.
