i Acknowledgments      Life has been an exciting adventure — the teachers have come and gone in miraculous ways. Thank you to Sherry Lewis who introduced me to Florence Scovel Shinn’s work. Sherry loaned me her copy of The Game of Life and I never gave it back. As a matter of fact, I cut the spine off the book, hole-punched the pages and put them into a notebook to access easily when I wrote the e-course, The Keys to Unlocking the Secrets – The Game of Life Unleashed! Thank you to Barbara Mark who gave me the title for the original e-course. Barbara suggested the title from the spirit world where she now resides and continues to bring love and laughter to my life. Thank you to Jennifer Hoffman for being the beautiful, loving, nonjudgmental, supportive essence that you are. iii      The Game of Life, by Florence Scovel Shinn, came to me during a very sad, unhappy period of time in my life. I had foolishly given my personal power away and it felt as if my life force was draining from me. Then a miracle occurred. I met a wonderful woman who saw the light of God shin- ing within me trying so desperately to survive the physical world. She asked the angels what she could do to help me and they led her to her bookcase. As she stood there in front of the books, she asked which one to loan to me. The Game of Life and How to Play It, by Florence Scovel Shinn, fell to the floor. As I read the words of wisdom Florence shared in the book, I couldn’t put it down. What Florence had written so many years before resonated deep within me. I took back my personal power and began to search within for my true self and reconnect with the Divinity within. As God’s voice spoke in my heart, my spiritual journey began. Many of us float around on the sea of life aimlessly drift- ing, living our lives from an unconscious lower energy state of fear. Then one day it’s as if we wake up and realize we’re unhappy with the life we’ve created. We want something different. So as we try to create a new life — using the same old patterns and thought processes — we end up creating more of what we don’t want and feeling worse. Do you see the problem? Don’t be fooled. The magic of this style of teach- ing allows the student to achieve a much deeper level of understanding each time the subject is approached. The workbook, written with Florence’s guidance, follows suit with “repetition with purpose.” We are beings of conditioned layers of fear. As we evolve and grow a new layer of fear is revealed to us. v Who Was ( Is ) Florence Scovel Shinn?      Florence Scovel Shinn was an artist, actress, and metaphysical teacher who began touching people’s lives in miraculous ways in the 1920s. She learned to tap into the source of human exis- tence, reconnecting as One with God. She understood how and why people created fearful, unhappy lives that spiraled out of control, and held the space for them to make the changes necessary to create a life of love and happiness. As noted in the introductory essay to The Writings of Flo- rence Scovel Shinn by Arthur Vergara, Florence’s “game of life” began with her birth on September 24, 1871. Her American blue blood family members included a signatory to the Declaration of Independence, a member of the team who designed the American flag, and a “Mayflower Bid- dle” who was related to George Washington. Florence studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she met and married Everett Shinn. While they were married, she continued with art, added acting to her repertoire, and became well known for her “brilliant con- versation and quick wit.” After fourteen years of marriage, Florence and Everett divorced. The divorce stimulated her new career as a metaphysical teacher and lecturer. Florence was ahead of her time: not only was she a divorced woman in the 1920s, she also questioned orga
