Sitting across from me at a restaurant in 2006, she said, “You know, when you talk about teaching math, you really light up. It’s like there’s an aura around you. I can’t help but feel energized and drawn to you. You should find a way to radiate that aura all the time.”
Andrea, a guiding angel on my journey to reinvention

Author’s Note
Dear friend,
Thank you for picking up a copy of this book. It’s my mission to help you unleash your best self and build your best life. I believe when we live life on that level, the world is a better place.
I wrote this book as an invitation to join me on the journey to reinvention. To do this, I broke it up into three parts.
Part One: The Case for Reinvention. If you are thinking about beginning the journey, this part is for you. The chapters in part one will help you evaluate your own situation and journey before you make any decisions.
Part Two: How to Walk the Journey . If you are already convinced and walking the journey but need help making the most of it, this part will teach you lessons from one of the greatest reinventors of all time, Leonardo da Vinci. You’ll also learn five powerful strategies for launching your first (or next) reinvention.
Part Three: Staying on the Journey. If you are already walking the journey, you have likely run into some of the challenges people face when pursuing life on their terms. The chapters in this part were written to prepare you and keep you motivated for the journey ahead.
Always remember, reinvention has nothing to do with becoming someone else and everything to do with becoming who you really are. I invite you to join me on this special journey.
Make your life great!

Your Guide on The Journey to Reinvention

Introduction
“What if life was happening for you, and not to you? Just imagine that for a moment.”
—Tony Robbins
What if the worst news you could receive today was actually the best news of the year?
One afternoon in May of 2020, I received an unexpected meeting request from my manager. At first, I didn’t think much of it since I figured it was probably nothing more than a routine request. We booked the call for the next morning at 9 a.m. local time in New York. My manager was based in San Francisco, so it would be 6 a.m. for him. This was a little strange, so I assumed it was urgent.
The video call started, and we exchanged the usual pleasantries. He said, “I’m okay. How are you?”
“I’m great! Updated our dashboard yesterday, and subscribers to our webinars are up 100 percent in just two months. Sign-ups and attendance for events are also up a lot. Shifting to digital events is really starting to crush our in-person metrics prepandemic.”
He didn’t seem to react much to the news. He actually looked a little sad on the video call. I asked him, “You okay?”
And then it happened. I got laid off.
On May 21, during the worst moment in the 2020 global pandemic, IBM launched its biggest layoff in North America. And just like that, in the middle of a global lockdown during the first pandemic of my life, I was unemployed. Feelings of uncertainty, anger, embarrassment, and sadness came over me. I was no stranger to these feelings because I had been fired and laid off before. I had thirty days left to hand off my work to my teammates.
Later that day, I called my dearest mentor at IBM, Jennifer Paylor.
Jennifer picked up my call, and I shared the news with her. “What? Stop it. Please tell me you’re kidding!”
Sadly, I was not kidding. She was upset that IBM had let me go. It felt nice to know I was valued by someone I respected so much.
Then she said, “I hate this happened to you, but I’m also not worried about you because you’ve reinvented yourself many times already. I know you’ll figure out your next chapter. However, I’m worried about the thousands of laid-off IBM employees who have only been with IBM most, if not their entire career.” She was concerned this transition would be difficult for them.
At IBM, I was the program manager for the developer advocacy team. I organized and sponsored events for developers. However, on that day, Jennifer empowered me with a new mission. She asked me to help my fellow IBMers prepare for reinvention before our thirty days were up. In that moment, she shifted my mood by turning my focus to an important cause greater than myself. The moment she said it, I felt the immense power of this purpose come over me.
I told Jennifer, “ Yes! I’ll do it!” I wanted to leave IBM on my terms by helping people prepare for the new journey ahead of them. Reinvention is an opportunity for people to build and live a life aligned with their values, passion, and purpose.
The Power of Purpose
I was inspired by Jennifer’s call to action to figure out what I could do for the other laid-off IBM employees. Earlier that year, I learned how to set up and facilitate a mastermind group. A mastermind is the “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose.” (Hill, 2008)
If there was ever a time for coordination of knowledge and effort in order to prepare for reinvention, that was the moment. I decided to host a reinvention mastermind group for anyone who was part of the layoff. The reinvention mastermind sessions were scheduled three times a week until our final day at the company. The mission was to empower people to write a bold and exciting next chapter in their lives. My first challenge was to get the word out.
I worked hard to promote the sessions internally as far and wide as possible. I posted in several internal online groups and communities. After a week, the mastermind got its biggest endorsement from IBM’s new president, Jim Whitehurst. Jim had only been with the company for a couple of months, and we could all sense he genuinely felt bad about the layoffs. His support was important and helped drive over 750 people into the group.
In our sessions, people opened up about their pain, heartbreak, fears, embarrassment, sadness, devastation, and depression. The mastermind group helped people process their difficult feelings and look ahead. As the weeks passed, I noticed the work I did for the mastermind was aligned with my own values, passion, and purpose. While the end of my time at IBM was approaching, I couldn’t help but feel like it was also the beginning of something new. It became clear that I, too, was writing a bold and exciting next chapter in my life.
The School of Reinvention Was Born
On our final day at IBM, over five hundred people joined the reinvention mastermind call. That final session lasted over three hours. People shared their favorite IBM stories and memories with the group. We discussed our next steps and even what we had planned for our first day, post-IBM. It was a special session.
With that, we said goodbye and signed off. A few hours later, all of our devices were wiped clean. No more email, no more access. If you opened up your laptop or turned on your phone, you got the “new device setup” screen. I guess that was appropriate, given it was time to set up a new chapter in our lives.
After that session, I thought, Why not continue doing this? I really enjoyed empowering people to get onto their own journey to reinvention. I could build a company dedicated to helping people all around the world define success on their terms and build a life in alignment with their values, passion, and purpose. I decided to call the company The School of Reinvention.
Over the next twelve months, I began to document stories from my previous reinventions, lessons I learned, discoveries I made, and the guiding angels who lifted me up when I was down. Then, in September of 2021, I decided to write this book as an invitation for people to join me on the journey to reinvention. This book is my way of empowering you to define success on your terms and begin living a life that is aligned with your own values, passion, and purpose.
Walking the Journey to Reinvention
I first got onto the journey to reinvention in 2005 when I found myself living a life I didn’t want for myself. I was not happy and didn’t feel like myself. I made massive changes to my life, including a series of adjustments to my day
