Description

Described by Professor Hans Holzer, a leading authority in America on the paranormal, as the greatest medium of our time, Philip Solomon shares his amazing story, from his childhood psychic experiences of been born into a mediumistically gifted family with show business connections, through his many strands of spiritual and psychical development, to the finely honed, highly attuned state of awareness he has achieved. For those of you who think that mediumship is merely passing on messages from beyond the grave to members of a Spiritualist church or theatre audience, then your eyes are about to be opened, as this book covers predictions, meditation, hypnotism, sports psychology, guides and angels, ghosts and the paranormal, healing, astrology, leylines and UFOs, with an emphasis on the innate ability in each and every one of us to develop psychic awareness. With a fitting foreword by respected fellow-medium, Derek Acorah, this book will definitely challenge your perceptions and broaden your outlook on life, both on the earth plane and in the spirit world beyond. In this and his many previous books, Philip Solomon's intentions and convictions are clear. He has been chosen by Spirit to walk a sometimes difficult pathway on a mission to prove beyond doubt the existence of life after death and other-worldliness and to assure those that have lost loved ones that death is not the end.

Dedication

Dedicated to Kath, my wife, lover, the mother of my children and, undoubtedly, my best friend.

Two of my favourite quotations:

“If you want to know the past,
Look at your present life.
If you want to know the future,
Look at your present.”
- GAUTAMA BUDDHA

“I do not ask for any crown
But that which all may win;
Nor try to conquer any world
Except the one within.
Be thou my guide until I find
Led by a tender hand,
The happy kingdom in myself
And dare to take command.”
- LOUISA MAY ALCOTT

Foreword

It was with the greatest of pleasure that I accepted Philip Solomon’s invitation to add my “bit” in the form of a foreword to his latest book “Guided by the Light: The Autobiography of a Born Medium”.
I often look back with pleasure to the time when I first met Philip Solomon. I was a weekly contributor to a programme “Psychic Livetime”, aired live by Granada Breeze, the then satellite arm of Granada Television in Manchester. Each week various guest contributors would be invited to take part in the show. Some were good, some were not so good and then there was Philip! I was instantly drawn to his warmth as a human being and his prodigious mediumistic gift. I recognised within him a special spiritual light and deeply appreciated the dedication he showed to his work for the spirit world. As we worked together, side by side, I was joyous in the knowledge that I was with a true master. I was at last working with somebody who was as committed to their work for spirit as I was myself. It is obvious that Philip’s gifts were also recognised by the viewing public, as he was invited back to the programme on a number of occasions.
Philip is an accomplished writer and broadcaster. He achieves a perfect blend of inspirational words with sound common-sense. Through his works he has assisted in dispelling the apprehension of those mystified by such things as clairvoyance, clairaudience and their associated subjects. In his own inimitable way, Philip assists us in expanding spiritually and gaining a greater understanding of the world of spirit. It is his wise words in the form of his various writings, and particularly his weekly column in “The Psychic News”, that have given me assistance in my ponderings of all things spiritual… and some things not so spiritual!
I have the deepest respect for Philip Solomon both as a man and as a medium and I look forward to the day when I can once again work with him on a project.

Introduction

I was born, or should I say, I chose to enter this life on 23rd July 1951, the only child of two loving parents, both exceptionally psychic. My mother, in particular, was to be my mentor, friend, teacher and protector. She had seen a lot of ups and downs and could quickly call upon life’s experience to answer almost any question. A committed Spiritualist and medium, mom also hung on to the ethics of traditional church values, always seeing her work as the work of Jesus. She had many clients from the very famous to ordinary old ladies who seemed very poor indeed to me, but she never took a penny from any of them for her gifts, even when money was really tight.
She was also a strict disciplinarian, yet a very down-to-earth lady in many ways. She knew I was psychic, probably even before I could talk, but never let anything or anyone frighten me with actions or talk I would not understand in my affirmative years. I remember, at about two years of age, seeing an old lady sitting in a rocking chair that no one else could see except my mother, who explained the situation matter-of-factly to the old lady and she left residence in that house. (She did come back some years later, however!) I also clearly remember talking to another old lady when I was about three in our front room. She seemed to be suspended about two feet off the ground.
“Hello. Who are you?” I asked.
“Can you see me, son?” asked the lady, adjusting her white shawl. “Of course I can,” I answered.
“Well, son, you could say I am your great grandmamma.” And with a smile she simply faded away.
I rushed to the kitchen to tell my mother what I had seen. Surprisingly, she told me it was only my imagination, yet in later years she admitted the description perfectly fitted her grandmother. Apparently she felt at that time she had to make sure I didn’t develop psychically too fast and end up being scared. After all, I was only three years of age!
I also recall lying in bed one night and seeing on the bedroom wall what my young eyes perceived to be a firework with the most beautiful colours that rose up and formed the shape of a tree. Of course, I now realise this was a vision of the Tree of Life. Other experiences as a little boy included seeing Red Indians, one in particular who was to become a future guide of mine, and has also been seen by my wife. There were Chinamen and people that today I would describe as of Mandarin origin and, to be honest, they used to scare me even though I am quite sure they never intended to. I also once had a dream in which an Indian chief and a brave came to my bedside and covered me with a tartan blanket, smiled and then walked away. Strangely enough, I enjoyed that dream and woke up happy and contented.
Returning to my mother’s background, what a hard life she had. The eldest of six children, born of my grandfather Will, a platelayer on the railway, and my grandmother Mary, sometimes cleaner and washerwoman of other people’s dirty clothes as well as that of her own family and, at other times, opera singer, show-woman and, so I am led to believe, a very good medium. These part-time vocations must have been difficult, for grandfather was a straight-laced, orthodox, Victorian-type character, who was not given to the appreciation of such arts! I never knew my grandfather and I was only about two when my grandmother gave up on this life, but whenever I look at my Equity card I always think of her. Mother fell in love at 20 years of age and married a man named Leslie, whom she loved deeply all her life. Unfortunately, this man contracted tuberculosis and passed to the higher life at the age of 28, leaving my mother, in her words, devastated. She always claimed that Spiritualism kept her sane and she went on to serve that religion as a medium, church member, president and worker all her life, despite suffering from very poor health all her life. I never really remember a time when my mother wasn’t very ill or in hospital. In fact, twice when I was a boy I was warned that my mother might die. I think I was eight at the time when I said to my dad and aunt, “She won’t, you know. My mom’s staying with me until I am grown up.”
But let me return to her life before I was born. When she was 34 she met my dad, an ex-staff sergeant in the Parachute Regiment and as dapper a little character as you could ever wish to meet! Mom was lonely and my dad wanted to marry her. In earlier years my mother had been the most beautiful girl imaginable and was still very attractive, whereas dad was a fairly ordinary sort of chap, but Karma being what it is they married and for two years they tried desperately to have a child but to no avail. Many visits to doctors and specialists followed and eventually mother was informed she could not have children. She said she was heartbroken but just got on with her life and submerged herself in work and the Spiritualist Church and this is where one night she received a message from a young medium named Gordon Higginson, a man who one day would become president of the whole National Spiritualist Church movement.
“Elsie, I want to come to you,” he said to my mother. “Do you know you are having a baby?”
“I wouldn’t think so, Gordon,” she replied. “I can’t have children.”
The medium insisted that he was right. “This is a boy who will speak to the world and he will stand on this very platform in this very church.”
“I don’t see it,” said my mother.
“We’ll see the next time we meet then.”
Fanny Higginson, Gordon’s mother, knew mom and insisted that her son was right. But mother was a medium herself and felt the message must have another meaning. Perhaps her mediumistic ability or pride had been slightly pricked. Whatever the case, she left church early that night and for the next few weeks just got on with living her life. By now, dad had become a dance hall promoter and this was the time
