Real Nightmares: 4 2FROM THE AUTHOR, BRAD STEIGER
real nightmare occurs when you experience a fright-Aening encounter with something strange and
unknown, and you know without question that you are not
asleep, that you are not dreaming. You know with every
ounce of your being that the chilling encounter is real.
I first experienced real nightmares when I was a
child. Today, my sister and I attribute our insomnia to
the ghostly visitors that walked through our bedrooms
nearly every night and kept us awake. Our farmhouse
was built on the site of the old stagecoach stop, and it
seemed that some other-worldly passengers were still
trying to catch the last stage out of this dimension. It
didn’t help when our parents tore the old house down
and built a new home on the same site. Our spirit
companions still appeared as shadows moving about the
house and amused themselves by knocking on the walls,
stomping about with heavy feet, and opening and
closing doors. Growing up with real nightmares on a
regular basis prepared me for the nights in my adulthood
when I would investigate haunted houses with a team
of paranormal researchers and encounter a wide variety
of other-worldly beings.

Real Nightmares: 4 3A Vampiric Demon
Conjured by the Occult
Stole His Wife
yan Harris is a sober, intelligent man. He works quietlyRand diligently and rears his two children as best he
can. He never stops hoping that someday the horrible
vampiric demon that seized his wife Elena will release her,
and she will be able to come home to him and the
children. In 1998, he told the remarkable story of how a
monster that seemed to come from another dimension of time
and space had stolen his wife.
Ryan Harris met Elena Sanchez in 1981 while both
were in college. In addition to her physical
attractiveness, something about her immediately attracted him to
her. Perhaps it was the elusiveness that lured him

wards her, urging him to try and capture those qualities
within her. Perhaps it was the hint of the exotic she
displayed in her tastes and interests.
Elena was deeply involved in the occult and
practiced many of its related disciplines. She was
accomplished in Hatha Yoga, meditated often, and had studied
a few texts on ceremonial magic. She frequently took
solitary walks through the woods in back of the college,
and when Ryan persuaded her to take him along, he was
amazed at the empathy she seemed to share with the
forest creatures. Her influence extended to the plant
kingdom, for no one could persuade plants to grow as
strongly and beautifully as she.
There were times that Ryan would come upon Elena
while she was engaged in other practices, and though he
never knew much about these rituals, they gave him a
vaguely uneasy feeling. He could not be sure, but he felt
at times that Elena’s assiduous reading of the Bible did not
necessarily restrict her to the beneficent side of occultism.
Indeed, sometimes it seemed as though she flirted with
the darker, malevolent forces. Aside from Elena’s occult
leanings, the girl was very musically minded, an
extremely talented artist, and she had a jovial air about her
that at once charmed and delighted her young suitor.
The two had been dating for some time; and, just
before graduation, Ryan gathered his courage to ask
Elena to marry him. Elena regarded Ryan gravely.“I will
marry you,” she told the anxiously waiting Ryan, “but
not because I love you. Don’t get me wrong, though,
because I am very fond of you. I’ll marry you because I
know I must: It is my karma and yours.”
She looked at him, tears brimming in her eyes, then
clutched his hand.“Oh, Ryan, I’m afraid it won’t work

What he thought was a product of his wife’s dreams was
suddenly there in the bedroom: A hideous creature with white
fangs curling around a serpent-like mouth. Its eyes were

out very well, not at all. Still, if it is to be, it will be, and
there’s nothing we can do about it. It has been ordained
by powers greater than we.” Elena broke off when she
saw the strange expression in Ryan’s eyes. She leaned
over and hugged him impulsively. “Oh, forget all that
nonsense I was babbling. Yes, dear, yes, I’ll marry you!”
Ryan forgot Elena’s sad prophecy in the years
immediately following their marriage in June 1986. Both of
them had come from small towns in the Pacific
Northwest, and they were eager to try city life. They settled
enthusiastically in Portland, where Ryan found work as an
accountant for a large printing company. The two
experienced no marital difficulties other than the usual
adjustment of one person’s habits to another’s until Elena
