Description

People, particularly in the United States, are often starved for human touch. Simply making any human contact can begin a healing process. Ingrid Middleton's book illustrates how she has been able to connect with people and help them through healing touch, showing simple techniques for others to do so as well. Ingrid is an inspiring example of warmth and care in a world that often seems cold and mechanical. A must-read book for all those interested in personal inspiration and better health.

I would like to acknowledge the people who have held me in my times of darkness. Bryan, for your support and love when I wanted to give up on myself; Jason, for giving me a reason to move from familiarity; and Catherine, who stands with me and shares my dreams that things can only get better.

I first came to know Ingrid, after a car accident left me with a mild concussion.
The concussion was not severe enough to keep me in the hospital or from working, yet
I suffered from dizzy spells, hampering my ability to concentrate for long periods of time. A colleague gave me Ingrid’s number and I arranged for a healing massage.
It amazes me that sometimes, no matter what we try or how strong we think we are, we need the touch of another human being to help us. With the help of Ingrid and healing touch, I was able to feel better in a matter of moments.
This has led me into a quiet reflection of how amazing the human body is. We are so incredibly designed that we are still discovering our own capabilities, allowing us to feel and to heal in ways that transcend understanding.
However, there comes a time when we, with all our intelligence and capabilities need someone else. We cannot live without the help of another person when we are born, we cannot love without another person. And sometimes, we cannot heal without another person.
This book is about helping others with healing touch. At the core of this, is the desire to help our fellow human beings, to love unconditionally, and to give without expecting something in return. With touch and learning how to use it, we can help our loved ones, ourselves, and everything around us to become balanced in body, mind, and spirit.

Discovery consists of seeing what you have already seen and thinking what you have never thought.
Body, mind, and spirit hold the mysteries of creation. This creation is more than we think… To understand how we function in this creation, we can study how body, mind, and spirit communicate with each other and with other souls.
First, it is important to recognize that inside of our bodies, we have a personal memory of all our experiences. Our bodies use a personal complex code to record all the ways in which we experience the world.
This memory begins in the womb with the first merging of cells, the tiny heartbeat, and the growth of the brain stem and spinal cord. Then we are born, and our senses come alive. Everything we touch and everything that touches us shapes the life-long relationship we have with our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves, as well as our environment.
Though we survive after the umbilical cord is cut, separating us from our mothers, if we entered the world and did not reconnect to it in a tactile and physical way, we would die. There are horror stories of babies in orphanages of Cold War countries who are never held or touched, and who never develop an ability to cry, because their needs are seldom, if ever, met.
Early touch shapes how we will communicate with others, and how we feel about ourselves and learn to love our bodies. Bodies are for communication, touching body, mind, and soul.
I first became aware of an ability to heal by touch, shortly after I started massage school. I began to touch people even if it was not during massage. During those times, the energy of my body seemed to merge with something greater than myself. Soon, people around me were not only seeing me for assistance in relieving the aches of their bodies, but for other, deeper, more perplexing spiritual pains.
The source of someone’s pain: physical, emotional, or spiritual can vary greatly.
Touch can become a catalyst to connecting with deeper levels of meaning.
We can be in touch with the deeper self and then touch others.
Tactile and sensory communication is universal, and if there is something we have in common, besides human bodies, it is this capacity.
We are able to touch: feel our own body and that of another person.
It is what makes us different from computers, robots, and material things. It inspires contact through the skin, so that we can touch and know someone else and discover they might have feelings similar to our own.
This book introduces readers to a way of understanding through their own human physiology. This is in contrast to a world becoming less about physical stimulation and more consumed with technology. We will end by exploring how our bodies are affected by this mechanization, and thus need more human touch.
In the beginning, some fundamentals of listening to the body are taught through meditations. We then follow with the progression of first touch, motherhood, and the science of touch and massage. We include steps that combine a practical and spiritual approach to using this science in a variety of settings.
Case histories are woven between actual therapy sessions. Explanations of technique are accomplished through storytelling, making the book a very personal guide to healing.
Touch is portrayed as integrated with and necessary for human communication, connection, and survival. It is a profound and wondrous way to experience the human form.
Above all, it is demonstrated how touch can re-center, re-focus, and be incorporated into everyday life, emphasizing the ultimate truth and joy of having a body, an adventure which begins when we enter the world.
Sit still for a moment. Close your eyes. Allow your mind to release, to let go, of everything around you.
What do you start to notice as you relax?
Do you see things? Hear things? Feel things?
What can you tell about your body in silence? What is going on inside of it?
Take a few more minutes to experience what it feels like to be alone and inside
YOUR body.
Is it heavy or light? Does it feel warm or cold?
Do you notice a pain, a knot, or tension? If so, where?
Now take a point of light and imagine it apart from yourself so you can see it. If you have found a pain, direct this light inside of you from the top of your head and down deep until you feel it approach the source of that pain.
Once you find it, encircle the pain with light.
Spin it around faster, slower, continuing until the entire source of the pain is surrounded and warmed by the light.
After doing this, use the light to make larger circles around you. Then, take it around and around the insides of you until it comes outside your body. Affirm that you are capable of healing the body in which you live, warming yourself with golden light.
Then let it continue into the room, the house, around the building and the block – until you are literally bathing in and completely surrounded by the light.
When ready, slowly become aware again, of your body.
How does it feel now?
Slowly open your eyes.
What do you feel now and where do you feel it?
You are beginning to relearn how to listen to your body.
Paying attention to the feelings of your body, for the first time in a long time, can be quite an experience. It is very important to do so before you ever touch someone.
When I ask my students to do the above exercise, they become aware of what their bodies are saying. They may ultimately realize: we have bodies for a profound reason, one which transcends the mere functioning of anatomy and physiology.
We have bodies full of moving energy which communicates messages to our brains, our limbs, and our hearts. All the while it is absorbing everything sent from other humans and, of course, our world.
This energy living and breathing inside this body which moves blood and nourishes bones, tissues organs and skin, has mystified scientists for years. It i
