T HIS BOOK IS a journey of self-discovery with a spiritual master. Everyone attracted to it will already have some inkling of what that might mean, and most readers will have been actively engaged in one way or another with the quest for truth or purpose. On the way we have all met the challenges of life and faced the obstacles in our path. But the meeting with the master is a different order of experience. For some the very idea of a spiritual master may itself be the challenge. But what is a master, if not one who has the knowledge and power to overcome every obstacle? Spiritually the master is the consciousness of that power and overcomes all that stands in the way of realising it. Barry Long is a living master; a man who has lived through the obstacles and accepted every challenge, who can say that he has realised life’s purpose.
We meet the master in this book as one whose purpose is to open up the way of self-discovery for us, to show us exactly what the world is and what reality is. Whatever point we have reached in the spiritual life, this is an intimate address to the depths of our being. Sometimes it is challenging, as the master must be. Sometimes frightening, as he penetrates the fond images we hold of the world. Sometimes astonishing. Always inspiring.
This is an anthology of Barry Long’s writings from the 1980s when he was announcing his teaching to the world. It is a collection of pieces, written for different reasons and gathered from many moments, but the book is really all of a piece, because all the words carry the same energy of direct statement and are directed at the world from the same place, the point from which the consciousness of the master observes the truth and unity of all things.
It is Barry Long’s way to publish announcements from time to time, either as free leaflets or advertisements, to declare himself and his teaching to the world. In recent years his spreading reputation has drawn people to him, but when he first began his public teaching, these declarations, articles and advertisements were the means of attracting people to the talks and teachings he was giving, at that time mainly in London and Sydney. The texts, and their tone, would either appeal immediately to the reader or more frequently drive people away. Thus those who responded selected themselves as the people most able to hear the truth he speaks.
The book has been compiled largely from those short articles, announcements and statements, but about a third is based on scripts Barry Long originally wrote to be recorded, including the text of ‘Start Meditating Now’ a popular audio tape that has been widely distributed since its first release in 1982. Not all of the material in the book has been published before, but everything in it was written between 1979 and 1989; though it has been more recently edited and revised.
The essays and statements each focus closely on a different aspect of truth or reality and taken as a whole form a notebook of spiritual memoranda, in which Barry Long seeks to express ever more finely the essence of what he endeavours to say. More importantly for the reader, the book serves as a course of teaching, a process of self-discovery which becomes ever more revealing the more we read it. The words do not just carry a story and meaning; they are the meaning. They say what they say. The more we pay attention to what’s on the page, without assuming anything about what is being said, the more it works for us.
There is an old saying that masters use: ‘Contradiction is the way’. In a book that has so many facets, where texts have many strands of meaning, criss-crossing themes repeat themselves and sometimes contradictions may seem to appear. Some things will seem so obvious as not to require saying; some things will startle and others seem blindingly opaque. But later we will read the same thing again, and it will not be the same. In other words, it is the way of this material to speak to us according to our need. It is for you to find your own way of reading it and of using it in your life. It is self-discovery with the master, and in your hands.
