About the Author
Foreword
Dr. Kathy Milano, PhD
I sat with an intelligent, creative young woman one day as she told me about a recent date with a man she was seeing. It was the perfect weather for lunching outdoors with an interesting man who had everything going for him in terms of appearance, intelligence, and worldly success. Upon returning from the restroom, this woman was taken aback when offered an unsolicited assessment of her face and body from this accomplished plastic surgeon. With generous intent, her date offered his expert opinion about how she could go about fixing every flaw in order to maximize her beauty. In the poignant silence that followed this story, witnessing the tears flowing down the most lovely face, I had one question: “Why didn't you keep walking?”
With every story you hear, you are offered the choice to listen from afar or dive within to find yourself in the characters and the play. I invite you to dive in and honestly explore how this common storyline has appeared time and time again in your own life. To examine where you were told you were imperfect and where, in response, you kept walking or were stopped in your tracks.
Within society at large and your intimate subculture, you repeatedly encounter gross and subtle messages directing you to alter your flawed appearance or behavior in order to present yourself in a more acceptable manner. Parents, teachers, friends, institutions, self-help experts, and media offer their well-meaning or indifferent advice about how to become more attractive, successful, or pleasing to have around. From a young age, this barrage of unsolicited advice is so insidious that it finds a home within you, masquerading as your own voice. Unfortunately, this conditioned, internalized voice joins forces with societal influence to interrupt the development of a resilient, generous, and balanced sense of being which proclaims an unequivocal delight in its own unique beauty. Depending upon the nature of your specific life experience, traumas large and small, and models of self-acceptance or self-rejection, you may have partially or fully digested this unsavory invitation to correct your inadequacies. This unfortunate side effect of growing up human in an imbalanced world may leave you struggling with an unsatisfied longing to be different than you are, a habit of self-loathing, self-destruct
