STILLNESS IS THE WAY records three days of intensive teaching and documents the work of a remarkable teacher as he shows seven people how to open their own ‘door to reality’. Many aspects of meditation practice and the spiritual life are conveyed with the energy of a live teaching. You can read it cover to cover as an inspiring guide to self-knowledge, and you can also use it step-by-step as an actual meditation course. Going beyond the formal devices of sitting meditation you are shown how to penetrate the source of restlessness and enter the depths of sensation within you – leading ultimately to the natural being of yourself where formal meditation is surpassed.
It is thrilling to discover a reliable guide upon this path of meditation … Barry Long, a remarkable teacher whose words have the certainty of a deeply realised being . MEDITATION MAGAZINE [USA]
Long is refreshingly direct, free of esoteric talk and full of practical advice. He does not promise instant enlightenment but I felt after reading this book and trying some of the meditations that the possibility was not quite so remote . GLOBAL LINK [UK]
There are clear instructions to help you do the various exercises and practices … And as the book includes dialogues with the original participants, most of the questions that would inevitably arise are answered. For anyone who is seriously interested in self-discovery the book offers a treasury of insight and guidance. Barry Long’s practical approach and undeniable self-knowledge are conveyed with such immediacy in this book that the experience of reading it is as nearly as possible that of being with this remarkable teacher in person . HEALTH AND HEALING [AUSTRALIA]
We are going to go continuously into meditation. I’m going to give you certain exercises and we are going to talk together. It is going to be intensive. I am going to show you how to be stiller and how to surrender your pain to the life and love within you. I shall endeavour to show you that stillness is the way.

FOREWORD
THE REMARKABLE GIFT of Barry Long is recorded in this book which documents three days of intensive teaching and reproduces as authentically as possible the process of self discovery.
Barry Long has been engaged in his own journey of self discovery from the age of 32 when as a successful man of the world, born and bred in Sydney, Australia, he was driven by an irresistible impulse to find the truth of himself. He eventually left everything behind – career, marriage and family – and went to India, arriving in November 1964. After many worldly adventures, he spent several months alone in a bungalow looking out across the Himalayas. His meditation led to a point of realisation he described at the time as ‘the immortal moment’. He wrote down what he had discovered and flew to London to get his manuscript published, but at the time no – one showed much interest. He stayed in London and for the next 20 years he lived his life according to the truth he had found.
The process of self realisation continually unfolded and increasingly people would knock on his door and ask to be taught or told the truth of life. He started teaching meditation to a small group of them. Eventually they proposed that what he was teaching them privately should be made more widely available. So they started to arrange a public teaching programme and undertook to publish the material he had written in India. The manuscript included ten lessons in meditation which had already been privately published in a limited edition and were much valued by those who used them. In 1982 the lessons were published as ‘Meditation A Foundation Course’. This little book, subsequently revised and reissued, contains a very practical and straightforward way of learning to meditate and has been widely distributed.
As a next step, Barry Long recorded a cassette tape called ‘Start Meditating Now’ which contains basic spoken instruction and some exercises not included in the Foundation Course. The tape prepared the way for a programme of teaching sessions called ‘Meditation Intensives’ which began in London in the autumn of 1983 and continued throughout 1984.
The ‘Meditation Intensives’ were two-day events held over a weekend for groups of no more than 12 people at a time. Those who took part were invited to attend follow-up days held on certain Sundays. There were also regular weekly meetings with meditation sessions, and public talks. The teaching programme attracted increasing numbers. The frequency and intensity of these meetings allowed Barry Long to reveal the great depth and breadth of his perception, and at the Intensives he took people through every part of themselves until the devices of formal meditation were surpassed.
There was a recognised need for a further book on meditation, more detailed and advanced than the Foundation Course. And because Barry’s teaching was available to very few in 1984 – compared to the numbers that have come to him since – there has been a growing need for a comprehensive account of meditation as he taught it at that time. The book you have in your hand is a long overdue response to that need.
It is in three parts. Each part is a documentary representation of one day of teaching and is an authentic record of events that actually took place. The first two days are a weekend Meditation Intensive. The third day is a Follow-up Sunday.
The Meditation Intensive that forms the first two parts was given on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th February 1984, in a large, cold, attic room high above a street in Holborn, London. On this occasion there were only seven participants-five women and two men: a grandmother, a housewife, a young mother, a publisher, a writer, a teacher and an artist. This small group, sitting in a circle, provided the opportunity through their presence and their questions, for Barry to express and demonstrate in just two days virtually the whole practical basis of his teaching. The event was recorded on tape and a verbatim transcript was later prepared.
Intensives were held each month but no two events were the same. The means Barry used to demonstrate the truth developed as the people he was teaching came closer to the centre of themselves. By the end of the year, groups of fifty or sixty people were attending the follow-up days on Sundays in a basement community centre in Holborn. At these sessions Barry would lead the people deep into meditation and speak directly to individuals, dealing with any difficulties they were experiencing in their meditation or daily lives.
The third and last part of this book is based on the verbatim transcript of recordings made on Sunday 23rd December 1984. This session proved to be the conclusion of that whole programme of teaching. Barry left England for Australia on the 27th December and when he returned two months later, it was to announce something new – he had stopped teaching meditation as a way of self discovery. The stillness and presence discovered in meditation was now to be brought into daily life, into a way of being. What followed is for another book, but readers of this one will find that before meditation is finished there is much to be faced, absorbed and done.
The way of meditation is a process; it takes time and there are steps on the way. By including the first Meditation Intensive of 1984 together with the last Day Session, it has been possible to put between the covers of this book all the necessary steps and virtually the whole process of meditation as Barry Long taught it, encapsulating nearly all the methods he suggested for introducing yourself to stillness, and the various ways of entering yourself until finally you feel
