I received a call from CBS’s The Doctors, a long-running medical talk show produced by Dr. Phil. They wanted to help Casey, a sixteen-year-old with chronic abdominal pain so severe that it would regularly cause him to pass out.

I was in my mid-twenties and life was good. I was in graduate school for psychotherapy at USC. I was an outgoing, active guy. But then I developed severe lower back pain, and it completely derailed my life. My symptoms were due to disc degeneration, and no one could help me.

I eventually read the book, and it didn’t get rid of my pain, but it opened my mind to the possibility that I could get rid of it. I decided to learn everything there is to know about pain.

Pain is always real, and the brain has the ability to affect where, when, and how much pain we experience.

The most common back surgeries are not effective at treating chronic back pain. The pain is real, but it’s neuroplastic pain. To treat it, we need to target the brain, not the body.

The body heals from a car accident, but for some reason, the pain persists. It’s believed that this is due to the brain’s belief in a collision, which leads to chronic whiplash syndrome.

The brain is capable of generating and maintaining pain. It is counterintuitive because the pain feels like it’s coming from our bodies, but it’s neuroplastic pain, and it’s coming from our brains.

The Doctors requested that I get an fMRI of Casey’s brain before and after treatment. The difference between the two images was staggering.

The brain does some very complex processing to generate pain, and no one understands it better than neuroscientist Tor Wager. He has found a unique pattern of brain activity when people experience pain.
