Sample Book Insights:
#1 The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi is a good starting point for beginners. It is a prayer that draws on the spiritual wisdom this gentle friar drew upon when he undertook the most impressive task a human being is capable of: the total transformation of character, conduct, and consciousness.
#2 The best are like water, benefiting everyone and not competing. They dwell in lowly spots that everyone else scorns. They find themselves in the foremost place and come very close to the Tao.
#3 During meditation, we try to pull out the plugs so we can concentrate more fully on the words of the passage. To disconnect the senses, such as leaving the world of sound behind, is difficult.
#4 As you go through the words one by one, think about how they sound and their meaning. As you concentrate on each word, let it fall into your consciousness and ignore the distractions around you.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi is a good starting point for beginners. It is a prayer that draws on the spiritual wisdom this gentle friar drew upon when he undertook the most impressive task a human being is capable of: the total transformation of character, conduct, and consciousness.

#2

The best are like water, benefiting everyone and not competing. They dwell in lowly spots that everyone else scorns. They find themselves in the foremost place and come very close to the Tao.

#3

During meditation, we try to pull out the plugs so we can concentrate more fully on the words of the passage. To disconnect the senses, such as leaving the world of sound behind, is difficult.

#4

As you go through the words one by one, think about how they sound and their meaning. As you concentrate on each word, let it fall into your consciousness and ignore the distractions around you.

#5

When your mind wanders away from the words of the inspirational passage, do not follow it. Instead, tap it gently on the shoulder and bring it back to the first line: Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. It will be difficult at times, but you must keep your concentration on the passage.

#6

When your mind wanders, simply bring it back to the present by repeating the words of a prayer. The more you concentrate on the prayer, the less you will be able to concentrate on the distractions around you.

#7

Select an inspirational passage to meditate on, and begin by repeating it over and over until it becomes imprinted on your consciousness. As you drive it deeper and deeper, the words come to life within you, transforming all your thoughts, feelings, words, and deeds.

#8

Keeping a notebook of pieces you want to memorize may help. When you are fully concentrated on a piece, the mind will obey you and make the correct turn.

#9

The best time to meditate is early in the morning, when you are most alert. It helps to have your meditation at the same time every morning. Do not increase the time without the advice of an experienced teacher.

#10

Don’t be concerned about time during meditation itself. When you are aware of time, a distracting element has entered.
