Insights from Chapter 1
#1
I had a near-death experience in 1976, which profoundly affected my life. I was never comfortable, and I couldn’t find any position that was restful or relaxing. I was disconnected from my life, having lost my way. I was unable to attach to anything or anybody.
#2
I had been experimenting with stretching, and I was convinced that it was the right idea to heal myself. I knew there must be a secret to stretching that would allow me to be as flexible as those lucky few who seemed to be born that way.
#3
I began to stretch my muscles, and as I did, I realized that muscles can actually stretch and contract at the same time. I developed more and more stretches, and I learned that each muscle needed to be stretched on the opposite side before being stretched itself.
#4
I contracted my muscles while stretching, and I was surprised by the increases in my flexibility. I thought I could get results faster if I stretched for longer periods of time and did more repeats of the same stretch.
#5
I was beginning to see personalities. People are born with specific behaviors, and their flexibility patterns match those behaviors. People with the same high personality traits have identical muscle flexibilities.
#6
I learned that when I taught people something that was specifically valuable to them, they would suddenly share something that was specifically valuable to me. I was constantly surprised by how nonchalantly people told me the exact thing I needed to know.
#7
I moved to San Jose in 2000 to finish writing my stretching book, produce my videos, and complete a research project. I analyzed a certified Pilates instructor and advanced ashtanga yoga teacher, and helped Dara Torres, Olympic swimmer, become more flexible.
#8
I had a lot of specialists helping me in my Olympic quest, but nothing seemed to help until I met Bob Cooley. Without the flexibility training that Bob developed for me, I could have never accomplished the five Olympic medals I had won in Sydney.
#9
The Olympics is about ageless dreams. Every second counts, and people are doing extraordinary things. They are proving to everyone that they can accomplish miracles. Severely injured people are clinging to a hope to come back to life better than when they left.
#10
Stretching makes you smile at the person who stares back at you in the mirror. It allows you to be curious about others. It allows you to poke fun at your ignorance and foibles. It leads you to new levels of emotional maturity, encouraging you to confide your deepest personal thoughts with the right people.
#11
The Meridian Flexibility System only begins with stretching and strengthening your body. People usually start stretching to fix physical problems, but they keep stretching because of the predictable emotional, psychological, and spiritual upgrades they acquire from resistance stretching.
#12
I want to teach you a new, organic way to stretch that will make you more flexible than you ever thought possible. It isn’t easy, but if you stick with it for just ten minutes, I’m sure you will be amazed at how much more flexible you become.
#13
To stretch your hamstrings, grab your right foot and pull it toward your hips. At the same time, pull your heel upward, unbending your knee and straightening out your lower leg.
#14
Resistance stretching is contracting and lengthening a muscle at the same time, something you were never told to do. You also must maximally contract while lengthening to see your true range of flexibility.
