Description

From one of the world's leading dermatologists, a major new guide to skin health and beauty that helps readers look ten years younger without surgery

Renowned dermatologist Jeffrey Dover and his expert skincare advice have been featured everywhere from the Today show, Good Morning America, and CNN to the New York Times, Vogue, Self, and many other publications. Known for providing high-end yet affordable skincare advice and products, Dr. Dover is the creator of the highly successful Skin Effects line. Now Dr. Dover shares his secrets with the rest of us. The Youth Equation first proves that it's not people's real age that matters, it's their skin's virtual age, or SVA, that reflects the way their complexion is behaving. The book then reveals Dr. Dover's unique program for looking ten years younger--at any age.

The Youth Equation includes a revealing quiz to calculate readers' SVA scores. Dr. Dover then walks readers through the world of skincare ingredients to create a customized do-at-home plan anyone at any age can follow simply by picking up a few products at the local drugstore. Dover's comprehensive product guide includes many popular brands and shows which cleansers, treatment creams, and sunscreens really live up to their promises, offering options to suit a range of skin types and budgets. For those who want to jumpstart their progress with a more aggressive approach, Dr. Dover demystifies injectable fillers, Botox, lasers and light sources, anti-cellulite treatments, chemical peels, cosmetic surgical procedures, and more with a combination of intelligence, warmth, and refreshing candor. The Youth Equation is a fresh and indispensable guide to better skin health and beauty.

Acknowledgments
Tremendous effort went into this book, and there are many friends and colleagues who helped along the way.
Thanks to Deb Maue, who first suggested that I write a book on skin care for my patients and the public, and to Carl Schmitt, who took over from Deb. He saw the value and importance of The Youth Equation and encouraged me to stay the course.
Thanks to my agents, Jill Kneerim and Brettne Bloom, without whose advice, guidance, and tenacity the book would never have found life.
I’m very grateful to our editor, Tom Miller, who offered us the opportunity to publish The Youth Equation . His years of editorial expertise proved invaluable for refining our ideas and concepts.
For making those ideas and concepts more than just words on a page, I thank our illustrator, Leigh Campbell, who turned my abstract sketches into beautiful drawings. Lou Frisina and Dr. A. Jay Burns supplied me with terrific before-and-after photos of their patients.
Dr. Ken Arndt, my mentor and close friend, has been a constant source of motivation and encouragement. His steadfast curiosity, judgment, encouragement, and generosity have helped shape who I am as a doctor—and as an author.
My wife and dermatology colleague, Dr. Tania Phillips, has been a never-ending inspiration. I thank her for continuous encouragement, ideas, guidance and thoughts, for repeatedly reading through early drafts, and for fine-tuning the final manuscript.
Last and most important, I would like to thank my coauthor, Cara Birnbaum, without whose indefatigable energy and even temperament this project would never have been completed. Despite many sleepless nights (Cara’s first child, June, was born while we were writing the book), her dedication to the project never wavered.
Introduction
Denise looked worried when she walked into my office for the first time. She was preoccupied with the fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots that had started to emerge on her face. Denise, a very attractive local philanthropist with chestnut-colored hair who was wearing large designer sunglasses and an exquisite outfit, was in her late thirties, and those early signs of aging were fairly normal. Nevertheless, Denise was willing to do anything and everything in her power to try to reverse the clock. She asked me about Botox and lasers and cosmetic surgery. During the visit she pulled a weird electrical muscle-stimulating device out of her purse—a gadget she had bought on a television shopping channel that was supposed to erase her wrinkles. She had the good sense to ask me about it before using it on her face, and I asked her if I could hold on to it. I keep it in my top desk drawer, as a funny and poignant reminder of the things that people will do to look younger.
People are paying more attention than ever to the appearance of their skin, especially to how young or how old their skin looks. You should see my appointment book. It’s filled with the names of patients who travel from near and far to my Boston office. Some come specifically to inquire about ways to slow or reverse the aging process. Others come for general dermatology issues, such as eczema, acne, melasma, or skin cancer, yet they, too, very frequently (often just before leaving the examination room) bring up their crow’s feet, frown lines, wrinkles, or brown spots, or ask me why their skin doesn’t have quite the youthful glow it did five years ago.
This brings us to the good news: my patients are so aware of each little spot, line, and wrinkle because of all the tools we now have to erase them. You can’t go anywhere today without passing a department store or a drugstore display for a so-called miracle anti-aging cream, reading about a fancy new laser that promises to make you look ten years younger with one treatment during your lunch hour, or seeing a glossy magazine ad for Botox and cosmetic fillers like Restylane and Juvederm. My patients are flooded with so much information about the latest anti-aging skin-care products that by the time they get to my office, some of them are telling me what to prescribe.
Sometimes they’re right on target. Sometimes they’re not. With all of the articles, ads, and sound bites floa
