Preface
About This Book
Adolescence is a crucial period for developing and maintaining social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. These include adopting healthy sleep patterns, doing regular exercise, developing problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, and learning to manage emotions. It is normal for children and youth to experience various types of emotional distress as they develop and mature. For example, it is common for children to experience anxiety about school, or youth to experience short periods of depression that are transient in nature. When symptoms persist, it may be time to seek professional assistance. While most youth are healthy, physically and emotionally, one in every four to five youth in the general population meet criteria for a lifetime mental disorder and as a result may face discrimination and negative attitudes. As with physical health, mental health is not merely the absence of disease or a mental-health disorder. Stressors such as these are normal, but teens sometimes find themselves feeling sad, hopeless, overwhelmed, or worthless. At a certain point, these feelings are possible signs of debilitating mental-health problems, and teens experiencing them are not alone. Most people with mental-health problems can get better. Treatment and recovery are ongoing processes that happen over time.
Mental Health Information for Teens, Sixth Edition offers updated information on mental health and its importance. It presents facts about the causes, warning signs, and diagnosis of mental illnesses, and explains how the adolescent brain differs from the adult brain. Some of the specific disorders described in detail include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosis, schizophrenia, and impulse control disorders. Mental-health therapies – both traditional and alternative – are discussed, and the consequences of not receiving treatment are addressed. A section on mental wellness provides tips for building healthy self-esteem, coping with stress and disaster, getting along with family and friends, and dealing with challenges such as divorce, abuse, grief, and thoughts of suicide. For readers seeking more information, the book concludes with a directory of mental-health organizations and a list of crisis lines.
