Key Selling Points
This is the first memoir written by a transgender person about coming out in a corporate setting. And that setting is Goldman Sachs, one of the largest and most respected financial institutions in the country.
This is an important book, not only for trans people looking for a way to be themselves at work, but for corporations looking for a way to support their employees, and for everyone else to understand the obstacles facing trans people today.
The author tells the bare truth, revealing her lifelong struggle as an alcoholic, the loss of marriage and family, her life in Japan before returning stateside, her corporate career climb, and finally the details of her transition to a woman.
At the time of her employment as a communications director at Goldman Sachs, Maeve DuVally’s coming out was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times. The financial reporters who were DuVally’s colleagues were witnesses to her transition.
DuVally now consults for corporations and other entities on communications strategy and diversity, equity and inclusion. She also mentors transgender people and is a frequent public speaker on LGBTQ+ workplace issues.
The author serves on the boards of GLAAD; the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship, a journalism non-profit; Connecticut-based LGBTQ+ health provider Anchor Health Initiative; and Trans New York.
The author was recently honored by the Girl Scouts of Greater New York at the 2023 Gold Achievement Gala honoring leaders as diverse as the Girl Scouts.
DuVally earned a B.A. in English from Providence College in 1983 and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism School in 1994.
“Maeve Rising is the unflinchingly honest story of Michael, whose anxieties and self-destructive tendencies sabotage every facet of his life: family, friends, career. That is, until Michael discovers her true self as Maeve. This book is important for vividly relating the difficult trans journey toward self-acceptance. But as importantly, it made me appreciate the complexities and difficulties that some of our colleagues bear alone, that could be borne so much more lightly or eliminated if they feel they have the support to show up for work as their authentic selves.” —Lloyd Blankfein, former Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.
