Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. For the reasons that I have named it has hap pened that in this new edition of my book the ground has perhaps been covered in a less complete fashion than was the case in the first edition. To embody all recent researches it would be necessary not only to re-write the book, but to enlarge it to an inconvenient extent. I trust, however, that in its revised form it will still be found a useful introduction to its subject. All the ground has been worked over again and much new material added. I am pleased to find that it has not been necessary to correctany of the main conclusions, and the last chapter is almost untouched. The only chapter in which it has been necessary to overturn some of the original conclusions is that on the senses; as originally written the chapter was based on a careful study of all the existing data, but those data were scanty; they are now more numerous, and in some respects they seem to point in a different direction.
