#1

The disease or condition you have is already happening, but there are many things you can do to slow or even reverse your symptoms. Medication can’t take away your autoimmune disease, but your body can heal itself if you give it the tools.

#2

If you don’t understand what your body needs to function and heal, you can’t make wise decisions about what you should do to keep it going. You might decide to take someone else’s advice about diet, but unless you understand what your body needs, you won’t know what advice to take and what advice to leave.

#3

Your cells need certain nutrients in order to function properly. If you aren’t providing those nutrients, your cells won’t work as well, and a malfunction at the cellular level could eventually impact any aspect of your health.

#4

The majority of conditions are caused by the interaction of multiple genes, which shift the efficiency of our enzymes in response to our environments. Through optimal lifestyle choices, we can keep the most harmful genes in the off position and the most health-promoting genes in the on position.

#5

Epigenetics is the science of how the environment determines which genes are active, and it determines your risk of developing a chronic disease. The key is to know how to shift the odds toward achieving the most optimal health, given your genes.

#6

The scientific term for a mutation in a DNA sequence is single nucleotide polymorphism, or SNP. We know that people with specific SNPs that affect the production of enzymes for handling the B vitamins or sulfur are more likely to have heart disease, brain disease, mood problems, and/or autoimmune problems. But you can turn off those harmful genes and turn on the most health-promoting ones by making healthier choices.

#7

The food you eat has everything to do with how well your body functions, whether you develop a chronic disease, and how well you can come back from the disabilities that a chronic disease has inflicted on you.

#8

The cell is the smallest unit of life that can contain the information needed to sustain it. It is the heart of the organism, where all the information lives. However, there are other things floating around in that cellular space, including the engines that power the cell.

#9

All cells in your body contain mitochondria, which produce a compound called ATP that stores energy in the bonds between its molecules. ATP helps your body create proteins and antibodies. It is the fuel used to power the chemistry that is used by your cells for all they do.

#10

The mitochondria need certain things to produce ATP efficiently: glucose or ketone bodies from fat, oxygen, and thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, pantothenic acid, zinc, magnesium, iron, and manganese.

#11

Free radicals are molecules with an open place for an electron that creates a dangling bond, which makes them highly chemically reactive. Antioxidants are compounds from plants that act by stimulating the production of enzymes that will neutralize those free electrons before they can damage our cells.

#12

There are a few signs that your mitochondria aren’t getting what they need to keep your system running at peak efficiency: you experience fatigue, you eat a high-sugar, high-starch diet, you are over 50 years old, and you take prescription or over-the-counter medication regularly.

#13

There is a correlation between chronic tension headaches and mitochondrial dysfunction. When your mitochondria aren’t powering your body correctly, everything begins to malfunction in a negative spiraling chain reaction that eventually leads to cell aging, organ dysfunction, and chronic disease.

#14

If any or all of these symptoms apply to you, your mitochondria will benefit greatly from a tune-up. The Wahls Protocol program will benefit your mitochondrial function directly or indirectly, but none more so than the improvements you will make to your diet.

#15

The human body is extremely complex, and we still don’t fully understand all its nutritional requirements. When vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant levels in the body fall below optimal levels, we see a clear decline in health.

#16

The Oregon Brain Aging Study measured the blood levels of various nutrients, brain size as measured by MRI, and thinking ability as measured by various neuropsychological tests, and then did regression analysis to measure the relationship between nutrient levels, brain size, and cognitive performance.

#17

Cellular nutrition is crucial for overall health, but brain cells need specific nutrients to function properly. Your brain needs myelin, which is the fatty insulation around the nerve cells. You also need thiamine, folate, cobalamin, omega-3 fatty acids, and iodine to make healthy myelin.

#18

The Wahls Protocol is made up of three parts: food, cellular, and brain-targeted nutrition. It is not the only thing that helped me recover, however, and it is not the only thing you should do to help yourself. Other factors include targeted toxin reduction, electrical stimulation of muscles, a regular exercise program, and a commitment to a targeted program of stress reduction.

#19

The Wahls Diet involves adding some things and taking some things away. The next level, Wahls Paleo, gets a little bit stricter. Finally, Wahls Paleo Plus is for those who want serious and rapid intervention.

#20

The modern world is chemically burdened, and many of those chemicals interact with our cells, often thwarting the natural chemical processes. I’ll help you identify where your exposures to these chemicals lie and the specific steps you can take to reduce your exposure.

#21

The Wahls Protocol is based on the idea that most nutrition should come from food, but certain supplements may benefit you. I will discuss which ones I recommend and which ones I believe are contraindicated.

#22

The Wahls Protocol is a way to wean yourself off excessive dependence on others and regain your vitality. It is easy to feel helpless and lost when your health declines, but the Wahls Protocol offers you a chance to wean yourself off excessive dependence on others.

#23

The Wahls Protocol is a new paradigm for treating diseases like mine, and it’s working for thousands of people around the world. You can start over and be healthy again.

#24

All diseases begin with cellular dysfunction. Whether you have multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus, your symptoms are caused by your body’s broken biochemistry. To return health, the chemistry must be fixed, and communication within and between your cells must be restored.

#25

The names we give to chronic diseases are often specific to treatments that make a difference in the symptoms. These classifications are based on physical examination and laboratory testing results, which are not always related to the root cause of the disease.

#26

The names we first put on most chronic diseases are the result of observations made prior to the scientific understanding of the biochemical workings of individual cells. Very little is spent to study how to create optimal health and vitality through lifestyle choices that can lead to healthier biochemistry.

#27

Autoimmunity is a condition in which the immune cells become confused and begin attacking cellular structures of the person’s own body. All of our cells have receptors on the cell membrane that allow the immune cells to recognize us as part of our own bodies. When the body doesn’t see or sense these self receptors, it interprets a structure or substance as foreign and a possible threat.

#28

The conventional medicine view of autoimmune disease is that the body has lost the ability to recognize its own internal protein components as native components of itself, and that we don’t know why. Scientists are aware that all chronic disease states begin as the result of broken chemistry and confused signaling between cells.

#29

Treating an autoimmune disease with functional medicine involves optimizing the body’s environment to minimize immune hyperreactivity rather than restricting normal immune activity through pharmaceutical intervention.

#30

It is important to understand that some patients will still need medication even after they have adapted to the lifestyle changes. This is because the medication limits how much additional collateral damage occurs during these positive changes, and should be continued.

#31

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, and it is triggered by the immune system attacking and damaging myelin and other parts of the brain. It is believed that people who develop this disease acquired an infection before the age of 15, and were not completely cleared from their bodies.

#32

The more genes you have that put you at risk of developing multiple sclerosis, the smaller the dose of environmental triggers needed to develop the symptoms that will be diagnosed as multiple sclerosis.
