Diabetes includes two diseases: Type 1, in which the body does not produce insulin, and Type 2, in which the body can no longer use the insulin it produces. Each one follows different courses of progression and requires different types of treatments. The occurrence of Type 2 diabetes—linked to diet, obesity, and inactivity—is on the rise. More than 30 million American children and adults suffer from diabetes, and approximately 1.5 million new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States, according to the American Diabetes Association. As doctors and researchers learn more about the causes of diabetes and develop new medications and forms of treatment, many patients can get their illness under control and avoid the worst of its consequences.

The Encyclopedia of Diabetes, Third Edition is a complete guide to the different types of this disease, signs and symptoms, and management and treatment. More than 250 entries explain the causes of diabetes, how the disease affects the body, and how it impacts daily life.

Key topics include:

  • Carbohydrate and carbohydrate counting

  • Complications of diabetes

  • Diabetic eye diseases

  • Diabetic nephropathy

  • Diabetic neuropathy

  • Emergency issues

Foreword

I am an endocrinologist and much of my time is spent diagnosing and treating diabetes. Diabetes is a major health problem in the United States and throughout the world. In addition, Type 2 diabetes is an escalating problem because of a rapidly aging population which is increasingly obese and sedentary, particularly in developed countries but also in developing countries as well. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are linked to multiple severe health problems, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and many other serious health issues. The disease also complicates pregnancy, whether the diabetes is a continuing issue from before the event of the conception or it is a case of gestational diabetes, which occurs only during the pregnancy, and then remits after the delivery of the baby. In this edition, we have completely updated our section on the health complications of diabetes and the multiple health issues that may surround pregnancy.
There are positive aspects to diabetes in the 21st century. On the plus side, technology today is more helpful than ever before, with insulin pumps improving regularly and continuous glucose monitoring systems that provide vital information to these pumps and to patients without need for needle sticks to measure patients’ blood glucose levels. We have updated the section on insulin pumps and provided new information on continuous glucose monitoring systems.
This edition offers a comprehensive look at the various types of insulins currently available in one stand-alone essay. This information is valuable for people with Type 1 diabetes and it is also useful for people with Type 2 diabetes who need insulin to control diabetes.
We also provide a detailed look at the multiple current medications now
