Foreword
I met Lynn Macwhinnie in 1996, a few weeks after I started at the Bach Centre. I was a beginner in Bach remedy education, a field she was already skilled in, and I was glad to be able to rely on her experience and wisdom. In truth, I have never stopped relying on them and as the Bach Centre s education programmes have grown, Lynn s input, advice and hard work have proved crucial on many occasions.
Lynn s career as a Bach teacher has taken her to Europe, North America, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and Asia. She has taught and inspired thousands of people, many of whom have gone on to train as practitioners or teachers themselves. But it s not only the breadth and depth of experience that make her such a fantastic ambassador for Dr Bach s work; what is significant too is that she does what she teaches. Everything comes from within. As she writes in this book, we have to do the work on ourselves first.
This book is straightforward, helpful and constructive, just like its author. You are in safe hands here.

Soul-sized steps
Despite all the spiritual teachings freely available to so many of us on this planet, we still have wars, chaos and destruction fuelled by power struggles, greed, anger, hostility and fear. What if the Bach flower remedies could play a greater part in healing the world and be used to ease the turmoil that must be in the hearts and minds of so many?
The reality is that as much as we might want to change others, we can only change ourselves. We have to begin from where we are within us. What we hear about in the world today is reflected in our personal and professional lives too. We are a microcosm of the macrocosm. Our anger, frustration, jealousy, disappointment, hurt, loss, despair and fears contribute to the soup of emotions that are evident in our communities and the nature of our tribal conditioning. We are each as much a part of the problem as we are of the solution. What would it be like if we spent more time responding to the call of our soul and discovered how to connect and communicate with others from a place of greater emotional wisdom, love and compassion? It is possible.
Fascinating discoveries in neuroscience reveal that there is plasticity to the neural pathways of nerve cells in our brain, and therefore the potential to develop new pathways. However, we are creatures of habit. We can see this reflected in our daily routines such as always travelling the same way to work or dropping off the children at school every day, often in automatic pilot. We might be too tired, or have become lazy and less curious, wedded to the familiar, rather than open to trying something new. In effect we have invested years in solidifying our existing neural pathways. We unconsciously become enslaved to the path we have created, resigned to thinking that we are this type of person, or that, and embed a life view that arises from maintaining a certain perspective. In reality there are other views, there are other routes, and there are gradients and shades to our thoughts and feelings. And we can change.
Recognising that change, growth and healing are possible is the first step, the next is to explore how the gentle, simple, self-help system of Bach flower remedies can be a bespoke resource in your development.
In using this system of healing you are, as Dr Bach said, flooding the personality with the virtues of the flowers . This means that by restoring your innate positive qualities, how you experience life and all it offers, will change.
If you are willing to take a leap and see what else is possible from within you, then the Bach flower remedies can be steadfast companions on your journey.
Bach remedies at a glance
For those of you who might want a quick entry point to the Bach flower remedies, what follows immediately below is an overview of Dr Bach s 7 emotional groups showing the remedies and corresponding emotions. Please keep in mind that this list is only a small window on a remedy, as they have many subtle aspects too.
There is often more than one remedy for different emotions. It all depends on our underlying motivation. Anger, for example, can arise from jealousy, intolerance, a sense of injustice or a need to control, to name but a few.
The key is to discover more about the emotions that fuel your reactions and how you behave. It is often as the remedies gently do their work that insights appear providing us with fresh information to actively apply in our self-development.
Some of the words on the left side of the grid may seem harsh but they represent an aspect of an emotion that we can experience at different times in our lives. Please do not judge yourself when you select the emotion and remedy that resonates with you right now, it is only one thread in your story.
The qualities listed on the right indicate the positive aspect of the remedies that are innate to you and your situation, even though you might have lost sight of these at the moment. Read on and discover more.

Emotional wisdom
I first came across Dr Bach s work, with its deep roots in the British countryside, while living in San Francisco in the 1970s, the city that gave rise to flower power . For me it was a Eureka moment of realising that Dr Bach s simple system of healing, consisting of 38 flower remedies, was the missing link in healthcare. This has influenced my work ever since.
For years I have asked clients, students and delegates a simple question: what would make your soul sing? The initial response is usually an audible sigh. It is as if, in hearing the question, the soul on its journey feels acknowledged for the first time.
It sounds clich d to talk about us being on a journey through life, and yet how else could we aptly describe this process of discovery, learning and growth? As a metaphor it helps me discover some semblance of meaning in the most challenging circumstances. What I came to accept is that we take ourselves with us wherever we go, both literally and metaphorically. The journey involves gradually progressing from being ego driven to soul impelled as we move toward manifesting the potential of the person we came into be. The pace at which we listen, learn and apply any acquired wisdom is as individual as we each are. The path to emotional wisdom is much more than a tick-box exercise, and requires us to meet our inner self in a way that we may never have done before. What can be a means of support and growth on the journey are the Bach flower remedies.
I do not doubt the efficacy of these flowers, having witnessed for almost 35 years their gentle healing qualities in my own life, and also with family, friends, colleagues and clients. The remedies as they work encourage us to be aware, to notice the subtle energy shifts, to be mindful, to integrate, and to hear the voice of our soul as we attune to our innate emotional wisdom.
Wikipedia describes wisdom as an understanding of people, things, events, situations and the willingness, as well as the ability, to apply perception, judgement and action in keeping with the understanding of what is an optimal course of action . Wisdom is, according to ancient philosophers, one of the 4 virtues that also include justice, temperance and courage, and all require the ability to control one s emotional reactions, known as the passions . These passions are described as the instinctive, emotional, primitive drives in a human being (for example, lust, anger, aggression and jealousy) that we must restrain, channel, develop and sublimate in order to be possessed of wisdom . To me that can sound like a battle to be fought and won, and it is a considerably gentler, however no less engaging
