INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this book is to explain what a coffee enema is, how it works, and its health benefits. Also, I wish to clarify what a healing crisis is, how to identify when you are experiencing a healing crisis and most importantly, how to break the crisis so that the body heals at a continuous and rapid rate.
It has been my experience that a lot of healthcare practioners either don’t recognize a healing crisis occurs or they don’t know how to address it.
The methods which I use in my practice will be discussed at length.
It is my true hope that in writing this book I will be able to help countless people regain their health and receive more benefit from the natural therapeutic programs that they may be following.
CHAPTER 1
ENEMAS
Enemas are one of the world’s oldest, safest and gentlest cleansing and healing medical procedures still in use. In every culture throughout ancient history, the enema has been used for internal cleansing of the body to rid it of harmful disease causing substances. Before there was writing, ancient drawings and hieroglyphs depict enemas being given to the sick. The Egyptian Ebers Papyrus, the earliest medical text dating to 1500 B.C. mentions the enema. The Pharaoh had a doctor given the title “The Guardian of the Anus” whose job it was to administer the enemas.
In ancient Aramaic writings (“The Essene Gospel of Peace”) Jesus tells the very sick to go down to the rivers edge and administer “the reed and gourd.” In this case, a hollow gourd was filled with water and a flexible reed used as the hose. The ancient Greeks, Babylonians, Chinese and Hindus used enemas. The American Indians used a deer bladder for the bag and a hollow femur bone for the hose. The world’s first use of rubber was in making enema bags and tubes. The pre-Columbian South Americans used latex from the trees for this purpose. The ancient Mayans had an enema ritual which was accompanied by trumpets, drums, wandering minstrels, and dancing girls!
Enemas were used regularly for centuries as a normal home routine of hygiene and healing. In my own family, the enema bag hung in the bathroom at the ready and was considered as normal a part of hygiene as taking a bath or brushing your teeth. Within the last forty years, the regular use of enemas is not practiced in this country. At the same time the general health is decreasing. There is more cancer, heart disease and diabetes and more new ailments plaguing us such as ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome and Epstein-Barr virus. Coincidental? Not at all! We are not cleaning out regularly the poisons from our bodies by this gentle and safe method.
It is interesting to note that until the mid-1970’s, coffee enemas were recommended in the Merck Manual, a respected medical reference book of current therapies in use.
By definition, an enema is a “fluid injected into the rectum for the purpose of cleaning out the bowel or of administering drugs or food.”
In herbalism, enemas are used for three things:
1. to detoxify
2. to stop pain
3. to stop nervousness
Coffee enemas do this extremely well. (Enemas are not used for constipation, although they will relieve it.)
Enemas are the least expensive proven therapy that you can do for your health. They are safer than both over-the-counter and prescription drugs but simple precautions and guidelines must be followed in the preparation and administration of the enema and the hygiene of the enema apparatus.
In herbalism, there are many kinds of enemas which can be taken. All detoxify the body and improve health. What I am going to focus on in this book is the coffee enema . It is truly the most healing of all enemas for the reason that it has a dramatic stimulating and healing effect on the liver.
First, in order to understand the importance and value of coffee enemas in healing, you must understand something about liver function and the liver’s role in healing any and every disease or dysfunction in the body.
CHAPTER 2
THE LIVER
ITS IMPORTANCE TO OUR OVERALL HEALTH
Without a healthy liver, there is no health. In herbalism, the importance of nourishing, repairing, and stimulating the liver has always been central to healing and building vital health of the entire body. The liver being the major organ of digestion and assimilation provides the nutrients to do this. Also, if the liver cannot eliminate toxic substances from the body efficiently, one of its main functions, symptoms will manifest throughout the body.
“The liver is the largest single organ in the body and is surpassed by none in the multiplicity and importance of its various physiologic activities. Accordingly, the state of the liver and the level of its functional efficiency are of great significance to the general bodily economy, both in health and in disease.” Thus starts the chapter “Cancer and Liver” in Dr. Max Gerson’s book “A Cancer Therapy.”
The liver is also the largest gland in the body. It amazingly performs over 500 functions. Most of these are closely associated with the functions of other organs. This miraculous organ’s name indicates what it does for us. It literally keeps us alive. You are only as healthy as your liver ! If the liver has a problem, you will have a problem surface somewhere in the body. Any disease, be it as varied as allergies, PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, psoriasis, or cancer is rooted in liver dysfunction. The more serious the disease, the more serious and extensive the dysfunction. There may be excessive toxicity or damage of liver tissue caused by various substances such as alcohol, birth control pills, anti-depressants, steroid drugs (including topical cortisone creams), fungi, and various vaccines.
The liver’s main function is to detoxify our bodies of harmful substances or poisons in our blood stream. All the blood in the body passes through the liver every 3 minutes. In herbalism, there are hundreds of herbs listed as blood purifiers. These are all liver herbs. The Good Lord gave us these natural substances to nourish, heal, and keep in good operation this most important organ of our health. Everything that you eat, drink, breathe, or absorb through the skin ultimately is filtered by the liver once they are metabolized and in the blood stream.
In our world today, we are exposed to countless chemicals that the human body never had to deal with before nor should it have to now. Our food is a toxic mélange of food additives, preservatives, artificial flavoring and artificial sweeteners. Our vegetables and fruits are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides. People spray their lawns and gardens with highly toxic products filled with heavy metals such as arsenic, aluminum, and lead, just to name a few. Millions of vehicles pour their exhaust fumes into the air. Household items such as carpets, cabinetry and furniture give off vapors which we may not even be aware of but nonetheless have a negative effect on the liver and our biochemistry. Add to this, excessive alcohol consumption, recreational drugs, and medications, both over-the-counter and prescribed. The burden to the liver is enormous!
The liver can suffer damage for a long time before exhibiting it in a dramatic way. As Dr. Gerson stated: “the liver can remain damaged for a long time because the deterioration of the liver cannot be detected before the great functional reserves have been consumed.”
Hepatocytes or liver cells eliminate waste, produce useful chemicals, and transform harmful chemicals so that they can be eliminated. This is accomplished by means of a complex system of enzymes that are made in hepatocytes. Special cells called kupfer cells are meant to gobble up or engulf harmful substances such as toxic chemicals, bacteria and fungi.
If the liver function is impaired due to damage from toxins, it cannot perform its functions properly. Health problems and disease will be the result.
An important aspect of herbal medicine has always been to purify or clean the blood. There are hundreds of herbs that are excellent blood cleaners or alteratives . These herbs always have a strong stimulating effect on the liver because the liver is responsible for removing impurities from the blood.
