Acknowledgments
My grateful appreciation to the following people, who gave me encouragement and help. Without their support, it’s unlikely this book would ever be presented to our readers. My thanks go to:
Norman Goldfind, my publisher, who gave me the opportunity to write a professional book for our general readers.
Roberta Waddell, my main editor, who spent months of days, nights, and weekends to make my professional language more readable to our lay audience, and who also gave me a lot of fascinating ideas about how to make the book better.
Melanie Chow, who helped me reshape my draft when she was an English student at Brown University.
Hong Su, L. Ac., my beloved wife, who is also a licensed acupuncturist—we trained together in Traditional Chinese Medicine in China. She read all my drafts, and gave me encouragement and many suggestions. Thanks to her endless efforts on my behalf, I finally finished this book, and for this, and everything else she does for me, I am indebted to her all my life.

Integration of Chinese traditional medicine with Western practices is the goal of many physicians who are trained in China, and the author of this book, Dr. Jun Xu, is one such practitioner who has reached this goal.
I first met Dr. Jun Xu in 1996, more than fifteen years ago when we were both training as interns in Pittsburgh, PA. I was impressed that he had studied in two Chinese Traditional Medical Schools, Jiangxi College of Chinese Medicine, and Guangzhou College of Chinese Medicine, and had then done postgraduate study in Western medicine at both Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and the University of Georgia. In Pennsylvana, he continued his training as a resident in rehabilitation medicine while I pursued internal medicine. As a physician who was fully trained in both traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Western medicine, Dr. Xu was well prepared to integrate the two systems and he has done so since opening his clinic in 2000. This book is the summary of his practical experience these past ten years.
When I reviewed the manuscript, I found that Magic Needles is not only a highly useful source for people who seek alternative medicine, but is also a practical guide for medical practitioners. In Parts 1 and 2, Dr. Xu introduces, in layman’s terms, a basic knowledge of Chinese traditional medicine and the details of acupuncture, which can help readers easily obtain a fundamental knowledge of TCM and acupuncture, including its history, theories, mechanisms, and current scientific evidence. By presenting this information in clear, simple language, general readers will understand why acupuncture works, which will give them the confidence to choose acupuncture as an effective alternate approach to their health.
In Part Three, Dr. Xu illustrates his practical experience with acupuncture and Chinese traditional medicine to treat various medical conditions, from pain management to a common cold. Readers can quickly find chapters on different medical conditions and learn the TCM theories for these individual cases.
In last decade, more and more Americans have come to seek treatments from alternative methods. Magic Needles outlines a number of Dr. Xu’s case histories from his ten years of practical experience integrating Chinese traditional medicine and Western medicine, and is a great source for those looking to be treated with Chinese traditional medicine and acupuncture, as well as for those practicing acupuncture in the Western world.

How may YOU optimize your quality of life and enhance your sense of well-being? For answers to this question, Dr. Xu’s Magic Needles is a must read.
During my tour as a Navy Physician in Japan, my patients who visited Eastern Medicine practitioners in the community introduced me to a tradition of medicine very different from my conventional medical training. I first observed acupuncture being done on one of my patients who had injured his back in a motor scooter accident. The effect of the first treatment was dramatic, and although the patient ultimately underwent surgery, he was able to get substantial relief from his suffering through the combination of medications, physical therapy, and repeated sessions with the tiny needles that were placed in his lower back and attached to electrical current.
The synergism of different systems of medicine became more apparent as I learned more about the philosophy and treatments of Eastern Medicine. Transformed by my exposure to Eastern Medicine, I completed a fellowship in East-West Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and went on to pursue this ancient (to me, innovative) model of healthcare.
Like some of my mentors at UCLA, Dr. Xu earned a Medical Doctor degree in both Chinese medicine and conventional medicine. In this book, Dr. Xu draws from his expertise in multiple medical disciplines to explain the diagnosis and treatment of common health conditions from both conventional medicine and Chinese medicine perspectives.
The easy-to-read history and overview of Chinese medicine will assist even those readers with no experience in Chinese medicine. Each recommended acupuncture point is clearly identified on the photographic image of a live model. Lifestyle self-care strategies are also a part of the care plan of each condition. Engaging stories of actual patients exemplify how Chinese medicine and conventional medicine may work together to solve challenging problems in a holistic way that is safe and scientifically informed.
So, delay no longer and start reading now. Dr. Xu’s Magic Needles , along with standard medical care and self-care will empower you to be your own number one advocate for health and wellness.

The Importance of Acupuncture
Acupuncture releases a natural energy that can alleviate even long-standing health conditions. Pain-free acupuncture is, therefore, an ideal treatment for asthma, bronchitis, depression, drug and alcohol addiction, headaches, smoking, women’s health problems, and much more.
Since acupuncture is not a self-help treatment as suc
