Description

Dr. Yutsis' theory posits that cancer is a well-connected whole-body disease linked to lifestyle, diet, age and how the different body systems function. He has identified 10 specific factors, including genetics, sugar, obesity, stress and toxins, that make it easier for cancer to get a foothold and become more aggressive and tougher to combat.

PREFACE
It s the Twenty-first Century- Why Is Cancer Still with Us?
In Russia, where I first trained as a doctor, we didn t distinguish between conventional and alternative approaches to medicine. The expensive technological treatments common in the West were largely unavailable, so we had to explore other options. We used a wide range of less expensive, more accessible treatments, ranging from healthy diet, vitamins and supplements, herbs, and oxygen therapy to acupuncture and other forms of bodywork. We believed that whatever techniques worked to heal our patients were appropriate.
When I came to the U.S., however, I discovered that most of my American colleagues had no knowledge of these alternative treatments, and no interest in learning them. American medicine focused on new drugs and high-tech diagnostic and surgical techniques. While these techniques are often critically important, it s also a fact that they have not improved overall survival from cancer . A 2004 analysis of all studies done since 1990 of five-year survival rates after chemotherapy found that there has hardly been any progress at all in this regard. 1
In the U.S., chemotherapy improved the five-year survival rate from all types of cancer by only 2.1 percent.
In the past twenty years, on average, lung cancer survival has increased by a mere two months.
Chemotherapy for breast, colon, and head and neck cancers increased overall survival less than 5 percent.
One encouraging response to these discouraging facts is the recent growth of the field of integrative or complementary medicine, which combines conventional treatments-surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation-with alternative approaches, including some of those we used in Russia. Today, there is a new breed of cancer doctors you can turn to, and I wrote this book to make more people aware of who we are and what we can do to help cancer patients survive.
Two factors led me to undertake this book: first, my training as a Fellow in Integrative Cancer Therapy, which boosted my knowledge and enabled me to treat my patients more effectively; and second, the many challenges brought to me by patients who begged me to help them survive.
THE FELLOWSHIP IN INTEGRATIVE CANCER THERAPY
In 2010, Mark Rosenberg, M.D., pioneered the creation of the Fellowship in Integrative Cancer Therapy, under the auspices of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, an organization dedicated to educating physicians and the public about innovative science, research, and treatments that help people live longer. Dr. Rosenberg, who had long studied the effectiveness of chemotherapy, was prompted to create the Fellowship by several facts.
Almost half his patients were likely to get cancer during their lives.
Over half of all cancers can be prevented.
Most cancer patients were already using alternative treatments with little, if any, guidance.
Dr. Rosenberg also knew that only two-thirds of those with cancer survive more than five years, and he wanted to improve the odds.
The Fellowship organized the knowledge and experience of physicians around the world into a course whose graduates could offer improved cancer treatments that would extend people s lives, while also giving them better quality of life. These graduates, myself included, are integrative cancer specialists who use multiple methods-the ones you ll learn about in this book. We combine these therapies with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation to make those traditional treatments more effective. Knowing all the current alternative therapies-some quite cutting-edge-that are available to you will make you more knowledgeable and empowered on the subject.
I M NOT A MAGICIAN-I M A PHYSICIAN
This is what I tell patients when they beg me to produce a miracle. No one can cure every case of cancer. But integrative cancer therapy certainly can make a difference, as the following four cases demonstrate. (In the following chapters you ll find detailed descriptions of all the treatments mentioned.)
Miriam
Miriam was diagnosed with uterine cancer and had a total hysterectomy. Three years later, a skin cancer on her face was removed. That same year, her doctor found that her cancer had metastasized to her lymph nodes. After undergoing more surgery, plus chemotherapy, Miriam, who was fifty-five, decided she wanted integrative treatment and came to me.
I started her on hydrogen peroxide, a form of oxygen therapy administered intravenously, in order to stop her cancer from progressing. She also had intravenous infusions of vitamin C and took a spectrum of supplements, including vitamin C by mouth, digestive enzymes, probiotics, high doses of vitamin D, and maitake D-fraction (an extract of an edible Japanese mushroom). While I was treating her, Miriam had three more surgeries to remove additional metastases in her colon. Then she had a colostomy. Finally her colon was removed, and she had twenty-four sessions of chemotherapy.
At this point Miriam s rabbi stepped in. Because the cancer had metastasized, he told her she should stop the alternative treatments and rely entirely on conventional medicine, which he believed worked better. Miriam decided to follow the rabbi s advice, even though her husband objected. I disagree with your rabbi, I told Miriam, but it s your body and your choice. She dropped my treatment and continued with chemotherapy. Although at first her condition improved, it soon deteriorated, and three years after she first came to see me, Miriam died.
I wanted Miriam to continue my treatments because I knew that conventional treatment is not effective for metastasized cancers. I can t say she would have survived with integrative treatment, but she d have had a better chance. In any case, my treatment could have extended her life for a few years-and improved her quality of life. Unfortunately, I didn t have the opportunity to try and make that happen.
Sarah
Sarah, a seventy-one-year-old woman, knew me because her husband had consulted with me for possible treatment of colon cancer. After a short treatment, he decided he didn t believe in alternative therapies, stuck with conventional medicine, and eventually died from his cancer. Some time later, Sarah was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, a cancer that affects B-lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells. Having gone through the terrible experience of her husband s illness and death, she decided on integrative treatment and came to me.
Since I knew that chemotherapy has about a 50 percent success rate for her type of cancer, I suggested she include it as part of her treatment. But the chemo caused terrible side effects. Sarah became anemic and so weak she could barely move. She felt drained, she said, and begged for nutritional support. So I started her on intravenous infusions of vitamin C plus vitamin K, and on hydrogen peroxide therapy. I gave her multivitamins, turmeric (the yellow curry spice; it contains curcumin, a substance with known anti-cancer effects), high doses of coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ 10 is a substance found naturally in the body that boosts the immune system), Inflamma-Guard (an ant
