FOREWORD
In a day and age where many consider truth to be relative and the Bible to be antiquated and irrelevant, there is one true story of life that gives meaning and purpose to all who would seek to find it. That could just as well have been said about King David's time. The people of Israel had, by and large, decided to become their own determiners of what is true and what is right. In the midst of a world marked by spiritual tyranny, David thought deeply about God, himself, and the world that he lived in. We are blessed to have a record of many of those thoughts recorded in the book of Psalms, which in some respects reflects how David was clinging to God's revealed word to make sense of life. I do not think it would be a stretch to say that we find in the psalms a visceral account of David's, and a few others', discipleship journey as they sought to bring the truths of God's word to bear upon every aspect of their lives.
The highs and lows, the adventures and the mundane, the gathering and the scattering, all provide the canvas upon which the Psalmists, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit of God, poured out their hearts in rapturous worship and painful lament. Yet sometimes we may miss what was prompting their elation or tears. Which is precisely why I am so encouraged by how Dr. Steve Parr has brought the events and the psalms together into a chronologically ordered devotional paralleled by the historical books of the Bible that document the precipitating events so that the reader will understand the bigger picture. And therein, we may let the voice of the Psalmists shape our own understanding of life and become the guide for our prayer and worship.
