Chapter One

Californian Dreaming

Mandy
I, Mandy, was born and raised in the small market town of Kendal in the Lake District of England. I came from a working class family with an older brother by eight years, so I really felt like an only child growing up. I had a happy enough upbringing, and my parents were very supportive and were always there for me and my brother.
I left school when I was 16 years old, same age as my oldest son now, which is a weird feeling as I remember being 16 like yesterday. From a very young age, I had always dreamed about living abroad. I’m not really sure where these longings came from as my family members were not travelers. My parents had never been out of England. London was the furthest they had been, but they were happy with that and had no desire to see the world, unlike myself. My dad said he did his traveling from his armchair, watching travel programs and that was enough for him. However, the desire within me was strong and travel was always on my mind. So after leaving school, I started a hotel receptionist course at my local college. In a way, I thought this career would open up doors to travel even if it was just traveling within the UK. I also worked part-time as a silver service waitress at a local hotel, which gave me money to go out and party as you do at that age, especially it seems in the UK.
Unfortunately, the course didn’t work out. The lecturer spent most of his time talking about himself and all the naughty things he did in his spare time, and the final straw came when we were sent to a Lake District Hotel for work experience. The long and short of it was that we never had any contact with the reception and the ins and outs. Basically we were being used. When we got there, we had to clean and, in the evening, we worked in the restaurant until 1:00 am. Finally, upon taking my parents into confidence, I decided to quit the college course as long as I manage to find a full-time job. Luckily, I was able to go full-time in the waitress job, not my dream job, but work nevertheless.
On the whole, I was pretty fed up with my life and always thought there must be more to life than this. I didn’t like what I saw happening around me; girls, whom I went to school with, were getting pregnant, settling down, and going out on Friday nights. That was their life and, most probably, would stay this way for the rest of their lives. That is fine for some, but not for me; I wanted more! Being around this gave me an extra push to get out. I searched jobs abroad and those on cruise ships, etc., but nothing really came of it. Mum and Dad were pushing me to get a better job and, more importantly, a career. They had seen a job advertised for a dental nurse at the local dentist, and, before I knew it, I was having an interview there which led me to leave the waitressing job. Again, definitely not my dream job, not that I had a dream job, but anything for a quiet life. But as they say, ‘what goes around comes around’. It is true as we are going through all this with our children now.
Life carried on doing the same old things: partying on Friday and Saturday nights—well, any night, if possible. Then came my first holiday abroad in Spain, Magaluf. This was over 30 years ago then came on my first holiday abroad to Spain, Magaluf, this was over 30 years ago. I loved the hot weather, the beach life and met lots of people who went for the summer to work and were having the time of their lives, I loved the hot weather, the beach life and met loads of people who went there for the summer to work and were having the time of their lives but then winter would come and then there was no work and would have to return back to the UK, usually broke. I wanted more. I wanted more. I wanted the move abroad to be more permanent not just for the summer and in all honestly, if one of my friends had said lets go and work in a bar in Spain, I would have been on the first flight out of the UK but they were not that way inclined and were quite happy as they were.
So I stayed in Kendal and became a good dental nurse. My parents really wanted me to become qualified but I did not see it as a lasting career so opted out of becoming qualified but continued working at the surgery, but honestly, I didn’t really see anything in the future. I just felt in limbo.
It was the Christmas of 1988 and we were short of staff at the surgery. They employed a girl named Sarah. She had previously worked there some years back but then moved to the US. She was back visiting family and just filling in at the surgery over Christmas. We ended up working together and got on like a house on fire. I loved listening about her life in California, a world away from life in the Lake District. It was uplifting and more than that, it was possible!
It was Sarah who encouraged me to take the big step into a new life. She said getting a job would be no problem and was very positive. When she returned to California in Jan, she said she would ask around for me. She worked as a nanny; she said English nannies were in big demand as the Americans loved the English. I was so excited; could this possibly be it – my ticket out of here. California was a dream destination. Was this my fate I really hoped for? Another trippy thing was that three dental nurses, who had previously worked at my dental surgery, had all immigrated to California and were all good friends out there. Was I going to be number four?
It wasn’t long after Sarah went back to California that she called me and said that there was a nanny she had met who was leaving and the family was looking for another nanny to care for their four children and
