FOREWORD
My experiences from a boy politician to an elected state representative have been many and varied. But I must admit that I have been blessed to have read many, many books and I have been able to teach myself from my reading. When I read “Ready to Win” I stepped back and took another look because I’ll tell you upfront, if you are looking for a warm and fuzzy book, you picked the wrong book. This is a book of life, life trials and victories over life. Probably one of the most profound things I ever heard was a quote from Benjamin Elijah Mays that so often is requoted by state representative, Calvin Smyre, who is Dean of the Georgia State Legislature. He said, “If you see a turtle on a fence post, somebody had to put him there.” This is a story of a person, Nez’ Sherie, who after being lifted to the fence post didn’t just sit there but looked around and saw and imagined how she could make this a better world. Here’s a story of a lady who struggled against some of the worst odds that life can deal but she would not become a victim. She could have sat down and said, “Woe is Me!” but instead she succeeded in life; she got educated, entered the military, became a Captain, outstanding service career, great community activist, works hard, believes in helping those who are less fortunate. She turned her life experiences into an opportunity to help those who are experiencing similar circumstances. Out of all the books I’ve read in all my life, this one had a very, very profound impact upon me. Knowing Nez’ Sherie you would never know what her journey has been about. As I read this book, this book told me more and more about what it really means to get ready to win. This is a book that anybody who wants to deal in public service should read; this is also a book that anybody who has had to struggle with some real barriers in life should read because this book is a ladder on how to climb the wall that’s standing between you and success. I like it because as an African American public official, I’ve seen many, many barriers. Now, I’ve been inspired because here is a young lady who had some of the greatest barriers I’ve seen, she was destined to be a statistic. She wasn’t supposed to make it she was supposed to fall into the status quo and just be one of the girls, she didn’t let that happen. She has fought back every time she’s been knocked down. It’s not if you fall, it’s can you get up? What do you do when you get up? Truly you can become a fighter and a winner or you can be a loser who sits around and mopes all the time. Reading this book, even after all the years I’ve spent in public service, has re-inspired me to do a better job, to do more because truly we are our brother’s keeper. She lives with this but above all else she has never, ever turned her back on God. She has always known that there is a greater power and that power is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who has been there when she had nothing to fight with. God gave her the weapons necessary to be in the battle called Life. When you read this book we should all become better warriors and we should be able to explain what it means to be “Ready to Win!”

TAKE CONTROL OF TIME BEFORE TIME CONTROLS YOU
“Look carefully at how you walk, do not walk as unwise but as wise, making the best use of your time.” ~Ephesians 5:15-17
Everybody enters this world on borrowed time; GOD’S time. He gives us unlimited blessings except for time, He made that finite. I now know He did that for a reason. I believe that life is God’s gift to us and what we do with our lives is our gift back to him. He placed us here to accomplish the work He gave us to do. We all have a reason for living; an individualized purpose, a distinct mission God assigned only to you. It is you who has to discover that purpose and then work every day to fulfill it; taking no breaks, no days off, working diligently, moving and living within that purpose. However, most of us choose to spend time carelessly worrying about the past and the things we have no control over.
I wake up every morning at 4:30am with a sense of urgency, no alarm clock needed. In the past, you’d have to beat a drum over my head to wake me up that early. But today, I know how valuable every minute of each day is so I maximize my time. Have you ever been the one to say, “I don’t have enough time to do this, or they have more time than I do to do that?” If so, STOP IT, stop making excuses. We all have the same amount of time in each day. We are all given twenty-four hours in the day to do whatever it is we need to do within that time period. If you sleep eight to ten hours a night, then sleep faster and wake up after five or six hours to accomplish more within your twenty-four hour period. I get five to six hours of sleep every night and wake up every day with a plan. Every morning, to get an instant morale booster, I begin my day by grabbing my gratitude bracelet and saying fifteen things that I am grateful for. It was given to me by a local Afghan man who used to sell scarfs and bracelets at his shop. His name was Hakeem; he was a single father trying to make a living. His wife had died giving birth to their youngest child and he was left to take care of his small children, with the help of his mother-in-law. Every Sunday he’d come on Bagram Airfield and sell his items at our bizarre to raise a little money to support his children. He and just about every other vendor at the bizarre sold scarfs, so there were plenty to go around. But this particular Sunday, I took a liking to some unique bracelets he had sitting out on a wooden table in front of the tiny storefront. Every bracelet had a leather band with fifteen little beads made out of elephant tusk. Me being a little OCD or, in some cases, a straight weirdo in my own way, I only like even numbers so I picked up bracelet after bracelet searching for one that had an even number of beads.
Eventually, Hakeem noticed my scavenger hunt and came to assist me:
Hakeem: “You like bracelets? It look nice on you, I give you good deal.”
Me: “Well, yes, I’d like to buy one but I’m looking for one with an even number of beads.”
Hakeem: “No even number, fifteen beads bring you good luck.”
Me: “How so?”
Hakeem: “Each bead represent one of my family members murdered last year by Taliban. I could be angry but instead I choose to be grateful. I am grateful for my God who give me the chance to know each and every one of them. I thank him every day for them and the joys I had with them while they were here with me. This brings me great peace and luck whenever I’m feeling down.”
I must have tried to buy every single bracelet he had on that table after hearing his touching story. I began to frequent the bizarre every Sunday and speak to Hakeem and take him candy to give to his children; one son who was seven and one daughter who was four. They loved candy so I’d buy s
