Extrait
I enjoyed reading the inspiring stories of these 30 Singaporeans, who shared how they came to Singapore and sunk roots in our society over time. For some, their loved ones made this journey together with them, while others married Singaporeans and set up families here. They have contributed significantly to Singapore in their respective fields and helped to make this a better place for all of us.
Singapore s racial harmony and cultural diversity are our strengths. These qualities allow us to remain cohesive while we seize new opportunities in a globalised environment by being a vibrant and innovative hub for investments, talents and ideas. We cannot achieve this goal if our society becomes inward-looking and xenophobic. More importantly, it is not who we are as a people and it does not reflect the values we stand for.
These stories of integration also reflect the experiences of many other new immigrants who have chosen to call Singapore home. Together, the narratives form part of our cultural tapestry and remind us that Singapore has been an immigrant society for centuries, and we must continue to remain open and connected with the world.
Majulah Singapura!
- Chee Hong Tat
Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Transport
Stories of Integration is a timely book in challenging times like these when our oneness is threatened by xenophobia and bigotry. These 30 new Singaporeans from diverse national and racial origins remind us that Singapore is a special place for all and we can be one united people, regardless of race, language or religion . In choosing Singapore to be their permanent home, they bring with them the wealth of their personal history to enrich our lives with their cultural and social contributions. It behoves us to embrace them as one of our very own, sharing with them our common national space, and with it, our common humanity for the good of all.
-William Wan, JP, PhD.
General Secretary, Singapore Kindness Movement
Singapore and Singaporeans have always valued the talents that immigrants bring to Singapore. I have witnessed first-hand how diligently Prakash has worked to organize bonding activities and managing welfare initiatives to help less privileged students. The book, Stories of Integration conceptualized by Prakash Hetamsaria and written by Vandana Aggarwal records the stories of 30 such new citizens and is a well-timed testament to their commitment to this country that they now call home. Congratulations on a great effort!
-Don Wee
Member of Parliament, Chua Chu Kang GRC
Thank you Vandana and Prakash for foregrounding these 30 inspiring and transforming stories. It brings back memories of how my forefathers first set foot on this island, their initial struggles in overcoming adversity and eventually sinking their roots here. We are an immigrant nation that has built our Singapore unique identity over a few generations. In embracing the true Singapore spirit, we continue to celebrate our cultural diversity, appreciate our differences and respect our shared values as a bedrock of a harmonious and resilient society.
-A. J. Suhani Sujari, BBM
Chairman, PA Residents Network Council
Singapore has thrived economically and socially because of our collective resolve to integrate people from diverse backgrounds and make them a part of the Singapore story. In a world where xenophobia and nativism has gained traction and communities are increasingly becoming insular, the book Stories of Integration showcasing the stories of 30 new citizens, is a testament to how things happen differently in Singapore. This important effort by Prakash Hetamsaria and Vandana Aggarwal will add much to our knowledge of the efforts made by new migrants to adapt to our unique social and cultural fabric. It also reminds us that Singapore is ever ready to embrace those who come to our shores, willing to contribute to our nation.

Principal Research Fellow Head of Social Lab

Vandana Aggarwal s book is so timely, it s unbelievable. Countries like Singapore, Canada and the USA have been built by people coming and settling down from other places. It has been seen that over time, these very people become overly protective, and are unable to accept that newcomers. Vandana explores the contributions of the next generation of citizens and what makes them passionate about Singapore. This collection of stories show that our new citizens are committed, cosmopolitan and creative. In them, we discover the very same spirit of self-help and community that has always been a hallmark of Singapore.
-Dr N. Varaprasad
Former Chief Executive, National Library Board
Negative stereotypes of immigrants, like percussion instruments, are oft amplified in social media. That such discourse has become more frequent is a matter of concern. In recent times, this has added to xenophobic sentiments, and aggravated racial tensions in Singapore. In this context, this compilation, which brings together the diverse journeys of 30 immigrants who have made Singapore their home, is opportune. Individually, each has made tremendous advances in their respective fields - be it medicine, healthcare, academia, business, entrepreneurship, literature or the arts. Together, they have all given so generously in their efforts to reach out to their fellow citizens. Like so many before them, their contributions have been made softly but significantly - collectively adding to the rich symphony of our nation.

Integration was the glue used by the founding fathers to transform a colonial outpost into a modern metropolis. People of all races and religions came together to form One Singapore. Astute socioeconomic policies ensured all citizens a place under the Singapore sun.
I commend my friend and author Vandana and her collaborator Prakash for relating the above saga through the contributions made by thirty naturalized citizens of the nation. This book will help us look back, to look forward in these challenging times.
-K. Kesavapany
Council Member, Puan Noor Aishah Intercultural Institute
People from a wide range of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds call Singapore home. We must cherish this diversity as a source of strength. The stories in this book help us to understand how immigrants have contributed to our society and economy, the challenges they face when settling in, and how our first-generation Singaporeans have worked hard to embrace our values and way of life. I hope readers will appreciate that Singaporeans - both new and old - have plenty in common, and that every one of us, regardless of our place of birth, can contribute to the next chapter of Our Singapore Story.
-Alvin Tan
Minister of State, Ministry for Culture, Community and Youth Ministry for Trade and Industry Member, National Integration Council
The People s Association and its Grassroots Organisations (GROs) play a vital role in engaging and integrating new immigrants into the local community. Efforts in promoting integration in our multiethnic and multi-cultural community provide opportunities for locals and newcomers to forge friendships and strengthen bonds as one Singaporean, regardless of nationality. GROs also work closely with Immigrant Associations and other community partners to cocreate community programmes for the benefit of residents.
The stories of integration in this book are indeed heart-warming and inspiring. Integration continues to be a collective work-in-progress, and a journey each of us can contribute and make a difference!
