Description

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book.
Sample Book Insights:
#1 You are the first, and you have often been the only. You are the first Black woman in more educational settings or professional settings than you can count. You have accomplished more than most people in your family and community have.
#2 First and Only is a love letter, a manifesto for progress, and a leadership resource. It is the opening argument to a trial on career advancement, asserting that the path for success for Black women is self-care, self-worth, and a willingness to push for progress even as we fight for our liberation.
#3 The stress of racism is even affecting our health, as Black women have higher death rates for nearly all cancers than white women, and are twice as likely to experience infertility problems.
#4 The book provides strategies on how to overcome career hurdles and racism, as well as insight on how to be successful from a racial justice and equity perspective.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

You are the first, and you have often been the only. You are the first Black woman in more educational settings or professional settings than you can count. You have accomplished more than most people in your family and community have.

#2

First and Only is a love letter, a manifesto for progress, and a leadership resource. It is the opening argument to a trial on career advancement, asserting that the path for success for Black women is self-care, self-worth, and a willingness to push for progress even as we fight for our liberation.

#3

The stress of racism is even affecting our health, as Black women have higher death rates for nearly all cancers than white women, and are twice as likely to experience infertility problems.

#4

The book provides strategies on how to overcome career hurdles and racism, as well as insight on how to be successful from a racial justice and equity perspective.

#5

There are five sections to the book: myths to resist, truths to embrace, strategies for healing, paths to liberation, and reflections at the end of each chapter.

#6

As Black women, we must always be prepared to resist, and we must never lose sight of the fact that life is unsafe. We must embrace joy and hope, even in the face of adversity.

#7

Actress Gabrielle Union was fired from NBC’s America’s Got Talent after she raised concerns about a toxic workplace. She was labeled a problem because her hairstyles were too Black for the America’s Got Talent audience.

#8

Many Black women experience additional intersecting oppressions, such as marginalization for being LGBTQ, differently abled, or otherwise labeled.

#9

I wrote this book for Black women who have struggled to find their experiences represented in business or how-to books. It is written for leaders and organizations who want to create safe spaces for Black women to do good work and be their authentic selves.

#10

Anti-Black racism exists within all races and ethnicities, not just white ones.

#11

The problem of cultural appropriation is primarily linked to the power imbalance between the culture doing the appropriating and the culture being appropriated. The power imbalance allows the dominant culture to distort and redefine the marginalized culture, while taking any financial or material benefit.
