Prologue
“Return fire!” shouted Captain Chester Tudor as enemy machinegun bullets impacted our foxhole area. Rounds ricocheted off the steel revetment walls that were protecting our beleaguered unit. Second Lieutenant Richard Taus was immediately struck in his left chest by a round that slipped through the open side of my flack vest. The force of the impact pushed me backwards against the rear dirt mound.
“Fix bayonets,” cried Captain Tudor as we braced for a final assault upon our position. Although Taus was still staggering from the bullet now lodged in his upper abdomen, he was still alert, following his commanding officer’s orders. While trying to secure his bayonet to his M16, another shower of enemy rounds raked their position. One bullet fragment hit Taus’ bayonet, inflicting a gash on his hand.
“Make every round count! We’re low on ammo. Taus, are you alright?” Tudor was a former Infantry branch officer from Kileen, Texas. His small elite unit consisting of less than 20 soldiers, half officers and half sergeants, was defending the north perimeter of Tan Son Nhut Airbase. It was the beginning of the enemy’s Tet Offensive, an all-out battle where the enemy units had silently pre-positioned themselves.
Taus leadned against the foxhole’s rampart, feeling the soreness in his cheast and the singing pain from the bayonet wound in his hand. Given the darkness of night, he tried to sight his rifle on the approaching enemy. The attack had commenced after midnight throughout South Vietnam. In Taus’ sector, a 700-man Viet Cong battalion was reinforced by the North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Despite the open runways and fields, Taus and his troops could not detect the approaching enemy forces until they were within 100 yards of their foxhole.
Spies within the ranks of the Republic of Vietnam Army High Command had been divulging US tactical plans to the NVA for years. Allied forces seemed to be unprepared for the 1968 Tet Offensive. However, there were early harbingers of this forthcoming attack since US ground forces were reporting large numbers of NVA soldiers and equipment pouring into South Vietnam.
General William Westmoreland, Commander of Allied Forces and his Int
