PÉàÇÉ he Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 – also known as the South T African War, Boer War or Three Years’ War, and still referred to by many Afrikaners as the “Tweede Vryheidsoorlog” Second War of Liberation/Independence or “Engelse Oorlog” English War – is the most devastating war which has thus far been fought in Southern Africa. Approximately 2 700 books have been wrien about this extensive war, as well as thousands of articles in newspapers and in both popular and scholarly journals. And in 1908, a mere six years after the cessation of hostilities, the ïrst doctoral study that dealt with an Anglo-Boer War topic was completed – interestingly enough, in the United States of America. Some hundred years after the completion of the ïrst postgraduate study on the war, and at the start of the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of the war, it is the purpose of this study to provide students, historians and other academics and scholars, as well as other researchers and anyone interested in the history of the Anglo-Boer War, with as complete a list as possible of all postgraduate studies completed on any conceivable aspect of the war, as well as of any other postgraduate studies that refer to some extent to the conict. Masters’ studies are usually referred to as theses or dissertations, whereas doctoral studies are referred to as dissertations or theses. For the sake of brevity and clarity, all theses/dissertations referred to in this publication are regarded as postgraduate theses, and will sometimes also be referred to as M i.e. Masters’ studies and D i.e. doctoral studies, or even more briey as Ms and Ds. In Chapter 3 a list of all the M and D studies is provided, alphabetically according to the students’ surnames, and per country, starting with South Africa, then moving on to the United Kingdom, the other English-speaking countries, namely the Republic of Ireland, Canada a bilingual country, although no French studies on the war could be traced in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and then the countries of the European Continent: the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, the USSR/Russia, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Swierland and Portugal. The titles of those studies that deal exclusively or almost exclusively with the war, are printed inbold. Background information with regard to each country’s role with regard to the Anglo-Boer War, is also provided. In Chapter 4 all the studies are once again listed, but this time thematically; for example in terms of military events, civilians and the war, peace eorts, and literature and
