Description

Finalist, History category, 2016 National Jewish Book Awards

Dreams Deferred arrives as debates about the future of the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict intensify under the extraordinary pressure of a region in chaos. The book empowers readers to be informed participants in conversations and debates about developments that increasingly touch all of our lives. Its sixty concise but detailed essays give facts and arguments to assist all who seek justice for both Israelis and Palestinians and who believe the two-state solution can yet be realized. Inspired both by the vision of a democratic Jewish state and by the need for Palestinian political self-determination, the book addresses the long history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its current status. It demonstrates that the division and suspicion promoted by the Boycott, Sanctions, and Divestment (BDS) movement will only undermine the cause of peace.

ADVANCED PRAISE FOR DREAMS DEFERRED

“For all of us who hope for a decent peace between Israelis and Palestinians, who oppose the occupation and the BDS movement, who defend, against all odds, the two state solution, this book is powerful intellectual armor and an intellectual sword.”
— MICHAEL WALZER , Institute for Advanced Study, author of Just and Unjust Wars, Thinking Politically, The Paradox of Liberation , and other books
“This book is aptly titled, particularly for Americans, who have our own continuing struggle with the unmet dreams and hopes of people in this land. The overwhelming temptation of parties outside the conflict in the Holy Land—i.e., those who do not live and move and have their being on that soil—is to take sides, judging one more or less just than another. The result is often exported and proxy conflict (in the US and elsewhere). The shalom and salaam that we call a just peace will come only when the parties involved sit down together to eat and share their deferred dreams. Proxies cannot do that vulnerable work of suffering, forgiveness, and growth. There are signs of hope in that work, but it is too often overshadowed by those who engage for their own, often unwitting, ends, rather than the good of all.”
— BISHOP KATHARINE JEFFERTS SCHORI , 2006-2015 Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church of the United States
“A rare blast of cogent analysis, reliable information, and just good sense about an issue desperately in need of all three.”
— ERIC ALTERMAN , CUNY Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism, Brooklyn College; Media Columnist, The Nation
“This critical dictionary of anti-Israeli mendacities will be a sword in the hands of anybody who wants to cut through the dogmas and the intimidations of the BDS movement. It restores the disputation to first principles and first facts. It documents a foul intellectual bankruptcy. Slanders are refuted and clichés are shattered on its every page. Dreams Deferred is an important intervention in an important battle of ideas. I hope it finds many readers, especially on campus. Israel is not perfect, but enough is enough.”
— LEON WIESELTIER
“Attempts to boycott the State of Israel and its academic institutions, in particular, have taken place since the establishment of the State, that is to say—for 68 years. Monitoring and understanding this phenomenon is a difficult task for both policy makers and researchers. Dreams Deferred: A Concise Guide to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Movement to Boycott Israel diligently provides a thorough analysis of boycotts, their origins, and their various parallel manifestations alongside a historical reckoning of the social and economic periods in which they took place. Cary Nelson is the foremost researcher on the boycott phenomenon, and his work is mandatory reading for those who want to understand and draw conclusions about the boycott movement from both a scholarly and practical viewpoint.”
— MENAHEM BEN-SASSON , President, Hebrew University of Jerusalem
“In the miasma of the campus campaigns to boycott Israel and to reinvent the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Dreams Deferred offers the reader powerful, timely, and lucid accounts of the debates and controversies, providing essential information, provocative analysis, and an accessible guide.”
— MARK YUDOF , 2008-2013 president of the University of California
“ Dreams Deferred illuminates our contemporary conflict-ridden moment through its mixture of cogent analysis, careful history, and thoughtful discussion. Its accounts of the tangled relationships of Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs and its lucid explication of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement make it an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the current crises on campus.”
— DEBORAH DASH MOORE , University of Michigan

INTRODUCTION
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run? …
Or does it explode?
The epigraph above is taken from Langston Hughes’ 1951 book-length poem sequence Montage of a Dream Deferred and to its oft-quoted poem “Harlem.” With Hughes’ characteristic directness and concision he opens “Harlem” with a question—“What happens to a dream deferred?”—and he answers it with a rejoinder in the form of a series of follow-up questions. To adapt Hughes’ phrase and his dream of equality for the title of this book, I have made the noun plural—“Dreams”—to evoke the politically, culturally, and geographically intertwined dreams of two peoples in Palestine. While Jews worldwide saw their long-deferred dream for the renewal of their ancient homeland realized in 1948, their dream of living there in peace remains deferred still. And the failure so far to make the two-state solution a reality
