SERIES EDITORS’ FOREWORD
Since the foundation of the seies in 1977, the study of Wales’s histoy has attacted gowing attention among histo-ians intenationally and continues to enjoy a vigoous populaity. Not only ae appoaches, both taditional and new, to the study of histoy in geneal being successfully applied in a Welsh context, but Wales’s histoical expeience is inceasingly appeciated by wites on Bitish, Euopean and wold histoy. These advances have been especially maked in the univesity institutions in Wales itself.
In ode to make moe widely available the conclusions of oiginal eseach, much of it of limited accessibility in post-gaduate dissetations and theses, in 1977 the Histoy and Law Committee of the Boad of Celtic Studies inauguated this seies of monogaphs,Studies in Welsh History. It was an-ticipated that many of the volumes would oiginate in eseach conducted in the Univesity of Wales o unde the auspices of the Boad of Celtic Studies, and so it poved. Although the Boad of Celtic Studies no longe exists, the Univesity of Wales continues to sponso the seies. It seeks to publish signiîcant contibutions made by eseaches in Wales and elsewhee. Its pimay aim is to seve histoical scholaship and to encouage the study of Welsh histoy.
