Description

Welcome to the first book in the "Will Austin Adventure" Series!

1884 in Northern Mexico. Two kids are gathering corn on their family's 500 acre ranch. Suddenly, several shots ring out! They crawl to where they heard the shots come from and find a campsite with five dead men. After checking closer, they discover one of the men, an American, is still alive, but barely!

Born and raised in Boston in the middle of the Nineteenth Century, Will Austin leads a life of adventure and passion. He survives the death of both his parents at a very young age, and the cold blooded killing of his best friend, Boyd. As a young man, he makes the long and difficult journey to Austin, Texas, to chase his dream of becoming a Texas Ranger. Instead, he finds himself in the middle of the biggest case of the century: catching the ruthless and murdering Gomez Gang from the depths of lawless Mexico!

Join Will in his fight for justice in the small, but growing, border town of Roma, Texas. How far will he go to hunt down the Gomez Gang and their brutal leader, Pedro, and what toll does it take on his friendships, marriage and body as he stumbles to the edge of his sanity?

“Outstanding book. I have been looking for this book ever since seeing a friend's copy. This book is full of common-sense advice intermingled with a well-thought out plan for preventing issues in a rental situation. Now that I've found this, I'm stocking up for gifts for some of my other friends, both renters and non-renters alike. There is enough good advice here for home owners to make it worth the read no matter your living situation."
ES - October 30, 2009

"Renting with Rex” is an informative book about how to increase your chances of being able to rent and own a pet at the same time. The assumption is that many landlords will not rent to people with animals. Ms. Phillips educates the readers about how to make it more likely for a dog owner (specifically) to be able to successfully rent.
The book is divided into thirteen chapters, with such topics as 'Moving with Your Dog,' 'Preventing Undesirable Behaviors,' and 'Renting an Apartment as a Pet Owner.' In addition to information on renting more successfully while owning a pet, Ms. Phillips also makes many positive recommendations for how to make sure the dog gets enough exercise, how to crate train a dog, what kinds of collars to use, and what toys are most effective for different sizes of dogs. She stresses good animal health by promoting veterinarian visits. The benefits of spaying or neutering your pet are also described.
It is obvious that Ms. Phillips loves dogs. She has an extensive resume of working with animals and has seemingly devoted her life to protecting dogs and ensuring that they find good homes. She seeks to give valuable advice. I appreciate her advice and important information."

Dedications

I would like to dedicate this book to my best friends and roommates:

“Dino”
GRCh UWP Woodacre's Court Jester AKC-UD AKC-RAE MB-RN MB-VM RL1 CGC TT2 SR1
Dino is an absolutely wonderful dog, and my life would be totally different without him. He is also my business partner and helps me to find lost pets by tracking them after becoming missing. We spend lots of time together. He was adopted by Grateful Dogs Rescue (www.gratefuldogsrescue.org ) in 2005, and we have been best buddies ever since.

“Rusty”
Woodacre's Little Big Man SR2 CAA
Rusty is a true gentleman in every sense. He is kind, gentle, thoughtful, loves to cuddle and he gives wonderful hugs. There is not a single thing Rusty can’t do, even for a very small dog. He was adopted from a shelter in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

“Mercury”
Mercury is my first cat. I have always had allergies to cats, but, luckily that eventually went away. I got Mercury as a long coated, four month old, orange tabby kitten to help me train Dino to look for cats, and he has been a trooper for dealing with the busy house full of dogs, birds and rabbits. I look forward to seeing his grumpy mug every day.

“Palo”
Woodacre’s Lucky Dragon
Palo is the next generation tracking dog. He was adopted from Canine Adoption Rescue League ( www.carlvc.org ) in Ventura County, CA. When I finish my next books, I promise to start his training! In the meantime, he is Rusty’s best friend and everybody else’s best friend. He raises eyebrows every where he goes because he is so handsome.

“June”
Woodacre’s Soidog Mali
June is the latest addition, recently adopted from a shelter in Thailand ( www.soidog.org ). A survivor of the horrible dog meat trade in that country, she has some stories to tell when she is ready. For now she is hanging out, resting and getting to know the world and all of its beauty.

And to all the animal friends I have shared my life with in the past: Dot, Scout, Chessie, Rowdy, and, of coarse, Prezo, the dog who started the addiction.

"Great dogs are not born, they are created."

Acknowledgements

First and foremost, I would like to thank my brilliant editor, Carrie White-Parrish. Without her, Roma Arroyo would never have come to fruition. I am forever grateful that she was willing to help me get this story into a published form, and for all her patience in answering my endless questions. She helped me believe that this story could become a real book. Before her, all I had was just a three ring binder full of typed pages. She helped me breath life into Will and Elizabeth and their amazing story.

I would also like to thank the extremely talented and patient cover designer, White Lions. Even though this cover went through many revisions, both back and front, they never gave up and remained patient with all my ideas. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted in the cover, and they helped me achieve that beyond my wildest imagination.

I also want to thank Elance.com for connecting me with both Carrie White-Parrish and White Lions. Without Elance, I would be stuck back at the beginning with a blue binder full of typed pages, dust covered from sitting in my storage unit for several years. Elance gives each person the opportunity to become a publisher!

Finally, again, I want to thank my dogs, Dino, Rusty, Palo and June, for waiting for me to finish writing before they could get their walks or go to the dog park. I hope I made the trips worth the wait.

Chapter One
Northern Mexico, 1884. Approximately 50 miles south of Roma, Texas.
The hot September wind swept across the plain, rattling the dried cornstalks of their field, and Pilar glanced up involuntarily. The day didn’t feel right, though she couldn’t put her finger on the source of her fear. It was fire season in this part of northern Mexico, and her family had been watching for the signs of smoke for the last month, but she did not believe that this was the cause of her discomfort. There was something else, something that wasn’t right in the area, and it struck deeper in her heart than a fire would have. She gazed across the fields, squinting her eyes against the sun and searching for the cause of her discomfort.
“Pilar, if you continue to daydream we will never get our job done,” her brother Santiago snapped, interrupting her thoughts.
Pilar glanced at him and sighed. He was right, of course, though she hated to admit it. They had been sent by their mother to gather the last of the year’s corn before it went bad in the field. These cobs had been left to dry on the stalks, for winter storage and grinding, but were ready to come in now. The stalks themselves were dried and ready for tilling into the earth. There they would enrich the soil for next year’s planting, and ensure another year of successful harvest. Gathering the corn cobs was an imp
