Sample Book Insights:
#1 Presidents are, by their very nature, the subjects of copious written material. However, in many cases, the absence of juicy sex stories is not due to the unsullied conduct of the president, but because of a dearth of detailed information in the form of love letters, autobiographies, and newspaper reports.
#2 Many American presidents have had affairs, and many of them have written about them. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton wrote a 100-page booklet about his illicit love affair.

#1

Presidents are, by their very nature, the subjects of copious written material. However, in many cases, the absence of juicy sex stories is not due to the unsullied conduct of the president, but because of a dearth of detailed information in the form of love letters, autobiographies, and newspaper reports.

#2

Many American presidents have had affairs, and many of them have written about them. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton wrote a 100-page booklet about his illicit love affair.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The White House has had several names since John Adams moved into a smoky, partially finished shell in 1800. The building was referred to as the White House in several newspapers before the British burned it in 1814.

#2

The White House was in danger of imminent collapse, and it was decided that the building should be torn down and a new one built on the site.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

The dark side of the dazzling confidence, charm, and talent possessed by many world leaders is that it can lead to a disorder called hubris syndrome, which is acquired by wielding power over a period of time.

#2

Many leaders are successful because they are crazy. While not all politically ambitious men have hubris syndrome or bipolar disorder in their full-blown expression, many are narcissistic risk-takers with feelings of invincibility.

#3

Many political leaders have been known to have affairs with their secretaries or other staff members. Donald Trump was known to have had an affair with his former mistress Karen McDougal, and he didn’t seem to care whether people saw them together.

#4

The risky behavior of Harding, Johnson, Kennedy, Clinton, Trump, and Lloyd George involved unprotected sex. In at least three cases this resulted in unwanted pregnancies and abortions.
Insights from Chapter 4

#1

George Washington, the commander in chief of the Continental Army, hired Hamilton as an aide-de-camp in 1776. He was extremely popular with most, but his frankness and words could cut just as efficiently as his razor-sharp bayonet.

#2

After the Revolution, the unity of the states broke down. Each state had its own personality, economy, and fears, and they did not want to govern themselves under the Articles of Confederation.

#3

The United States was founded under the Constitution in 1787, which was drafted by Alexander Hamilton. It was a central government that collected taxes, paid back old loans, and negotiated new ones. The basic elements of our present system of government came into effect.

#4

The American press, which had gleefully lampooned King George III, his taxes, and his soldiers, now turned to partisan politics. Each paper was either Republican or Federalist, and spent much of its ink skewering the other side with little regard for facts.

#5

Maria and Hamilton’s affair continued after Eliza returned home, and she continued to pretend to be his friend. Then, on December 15, 1791, Reynolds informed Hamilton that his wife had confessed her affair to him.

#6

In 1792, Hamilton was charged with ruining a marriage by alienating the wife’s affections. He had been breaking his own ethical regulations and had secretly made $30,000 from this criminal activity.

#7

The Reynolds affair might never have come to light if James Reynolds and Jacob Clingman had not been charged in November 1792 with defrauding old Revolutionary War soldiers. The delegation that investigated the matter, led by James Monroe, copied Hamilton’s letters to James Reynolds and showed them to him.

#8

In 1796, during the presidential election, Hamilton wrote twenty-five articles in the Gazette of the United States disparaging Thomas Jefferson. He claimed that Jefferson had made a fortune by speculating in government securities, and that he had paid Reynolds not for blackmail related to adultery, but for speculation.

#9

Hamilton wrote a book detailing his relationship with Maria, titled Observations on Certain Documents Contained in No. V and No. VI of The History of the United States for the Year 1796, in Which the Charge of Speculation Against Alexander Hamilton, Late Secretary of the Treasury, Is Refuted.

#10

After the Reynolds affair, Hamilton’s reputation as a public figure was never harmed. His affair remained the subject of Republican jokes, but his reputation for public integrity was unharmed.
