My family was a large, complex one that often caused confusion in my young mind. We were not exceptional, but we were representative of many other Jews who lived in Berlin during the Weimar era.

My father, Ernst Julius Angress, was a Jew from Berlin. He was a salaried employee of a private bank in Berlin. He had begun working there at the turn of the century and by the end of World War I had become the Prokurist, or owners’ representative. In 1932 he took over the bank.
