Foreword
In his revolutionary 1951 poem, Langston Hughes famously posed the question, “What happens to a dream deferred?” While the answer to that question is complicated, one reason for the deferment of the American Dream is simple: discrimination. Discrimination is and has been an obtrusive yet sometimes subtle function within American life and history. The discriminatory practices upheld by laws and societal norms have caused a significantly damaging effect on the health and wellbeing of the nation.
Understanding and Navigating Discrimination in America is a historical and practical exploration of the “why” with regard to the pervasiveness of discrimination within the United States. It is imperative that we understand the attitudes of different minority groups, particularly as the social discourse in America becomes increasingly more hostile and divisive. It is also important we understand the structural issues within our society that make it incredibly difficult to rid ourselves of discriminatory practices. In our current period of civil and social unrest, this requires honest examination, open understanding, and careful navigation through the nuances of systematic barriers.
Just within the area of work and labor, the devastating impact of discrimination can be seen in higher unemployment rates, fewer job opportunities, lower pay, poorer benefits, and greater job instability. T
