Bibliography
About The Author
Dedication
First and foremost, this book is dedicated to my loving family consisting of my loving wife, brother, mother, father, maternal aunt and grandparents, and my extended family relatives and friends. Second, this book is dedicated to mentors and instructors, especially Lorenz E. Zimmerman, MD, who influenced my decision to pursue ophthalmology as my life’s work, and others who have indirectly made this book possible by sharing with me their earnest enthusiasm for discovery and scholarship with the goal of somehow changing, for the better, the world in which we and our patients live. Finally, and of greatest importance, this book is dedicated to those who have entrusted their well-being to us and are deserving of the highest quality eye care possible at all times, our patients. By striving daily to improve and update our knowledge of eye disease therapy, we can hope to contribute to our patient’s perpetual good health, happiness, and visual performance zenith. Internet searches will always provide greater details and clarifications of updated medications, medication dosing guidelines, medication frequency recommendations, medication contraindications, medication adverse effects and updated medical and surgical treatment strategies in ophthalmology, than can possibly be included in this textbook. This book will provide a firm foundation for treatment strategies that can then be pursued and supplemented with online internet research and updates to the information contained in this textbook. My best wishes extend to all those who have valiantly committed their lives to the medical and surgical care of others, including the various eye diseases they might present with each day, and who will greatly benefit from having this ophthalmology textbook as an invaluable, life-long reference guide and resource to provide optimal care for our patients.
Alan C. Westeren, MD
Intent of This Book
This book is intended for use by all individuals involved in the routine surveillance and care of the eye, especially eye care professionals [e.g., ophthalmologists (Eye MD’s) and optometrists] who will be completing written and oral board examinations. This book has been written in such a way so as to provide rapid, succinct, and convenient indexed information on current concepts of eye disease therapy (e.g., clinical pearls, etiology, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up, and treatment summaries). Ophthalmic drug names, dosages, dosing frequency information, and drug classification information for routine eye medications used by eye care specialists, family practitioners, ear, nose and throat specialists and other medical sub-specialties is also included in this work.
Various medical specialists may use this reference to better understand eye disease therapy and ocular drug doses, actions, side effects, and potential drug interactions with systemic medications and systemic disease processes involving their patients. Familiarity with this book will, thus, optimize eye disease therapy of patients by eye care professionals and non-eye care medical professionals alike, creating a mutual understanding of ocular manifestations (e.g., “Clinical Pearls”) of systemic diseases, etiology, differential diagnosis, work-up and a “Treatment Summary” for each eye condition or disease.
The information in this book should serve as a valuable tool for allied eye care professionals such as ocular technicians, opticians, and other office practice personnel. These professionals who are involved in screening patients with eye disease and ordering or stocking eye medications, ordering eye examination equipment and other eye-related supplies should find this text very helpful.
A quick reference list (common eye conditions / diseases) and a table of contents are both present in the front section of this book and a comprehensive alphabetical index is provided at the back of this book. The layout of this text was designed to facilitate quick and easy access to clinical diagnostic pearls, disease-specific work-ups, differential diagnosis lists, eye disease treatment summaries and detailed ophthalmic drug therapy dosing and frequency information, as well as drug interaction and drug contraindications information.
