Description

Over the past ten years tremendous progress has been achieved in corneal surgery. This volume – the 6th in the 'ESASO Course Series' – reflects the most relevant topics ranging from basic knowledge to the most advanced techniques. It covers the functional anatomy with medical and surgical management of the ocular surface, provides information on high-risk corneal transplantation and explains techniques such as corneal collagen crosslinking, femtosecond laser-assisted penetrating, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK). Further contributions describe how to manage astigmatism after corneal transplantation as well as indications of intrastroma corneal ring segments (ICRS) in keratoconus. Well-known corneal and ocular surface surgeons and refractive surgery specialists share their experience in this publication, making it a must-read for every anterior segment surgeon, especially those performing corneal surgery and using corneal refractive procedures.

Preface
Today, there are multiple attractive options for postgraduate training in ophthalmology, but at the same time, these are frequently confusing for the surgeon: which is the best option to select, taking into account the time and space limitations that we all need to deal with? We can focus on peer-reviewed journals and papers, specialized books, national and international meetings and courses, multiple specialized as well as more general websites, etc., all of them useful but with their own particular limitations: sometimes these are already a little bit ‘outdated’ or disorganized when they reach our desk; sometimes we have some inconvenience to attend the proper meetings; and, on other occasions, we have low scientific and academic support. This is why some European societies are strongly focusing on investing time and resources on education as their main goal, as is the case for the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and the European Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface Disease Specialist (EuCornea).
Based on our experience and an excellent response from the participants in teaching modules in Lugano, the main goal of the ESASO Book Series has been to offer the ophthalmology trainee an up-to-date review of a selection of important topics, mixing basic information with the most advanced techniques. In this book, the individuals responsible for each lesson are corneal and ocular surface surgeons as well as refractive surgery specialists who are well known worldwide and who have invested a significant amount of their time in generously teaching and sharing their own experience with academics.
