Description

Don’t Let your Family get burned!

In her newest book, Dr. Lani Simpson provides readers with no-nonsense, easy-to-understand advise about the sun and how our bodies react to sun exposure. This go-to-guide for all members of the family includes: practical information about how to obtain vitamin D from the sun safely, how to protect yourself and your family from sunburns and how to find safe SPF products and apply them properly. This book examines how our ancestors worshipped the sun and how those beliefs affect our relationship with the sun in present times. Dr. Lani’s No-nonsense Sun Health Guide advocates for a conscious and respectful relationship with the sun.

The sun is now listed as a carcinogen – this is true, however there are hundreds of conditions that have been associated with vitamin D deficiency – multiple cancers, hormone imbalance (PMS), bone loss and osteoporosis to multiple sclerosis. So how do we get the the vitamins and nutrients we need from the sun without damaging our health? Is taking a vitamin D supplement the answer? If so how much? These questions and many more are addressed in Dr. Lani’s No-nonsense Sun Health Guide.

About the Author
Foreword
Over the past ten years, I have enjoyed a professionally collaborative and warm personal friendship with Dr. Lani Simpson. When I first started reading the book, I did not expect not to be able to put it down. I learned so much from this book and thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Simpson s accessible writing style. Chapter 1 immediately engaged me, as I read about the role of the sun in different cultures in the ancient world, ranging from worshipping it (the Egyptians) to avoiding it (the Greeks). It also set the nuanced tone for the entire book, explaining the value of the sun in producing vitamin D while recognizing the risks of burns and cancer.
Dr. Lani s No Nonsense Sun Health Guide lives up to its name, No-nonsense. It is refreshing to read a more balanced point of view regarding sun exposure. Some doctors recommend sun avoidance completely while others promote sun exposure. Dr. Simpson s recommendation regarding a mindful relationship with the sun is very important as she points out, Don t Get Burned , warning us against intense sun exposure, as well as chronic sun exposure without the use of practical measures to protect the skin.
Although she has sustained over 20 skin cancers and is at high risk of developing melanoma, she still exposes her skin to mindful and limited sunlight to make some of her vitamin D. Dr. Simpson discuses pre-cancers, skin cancer types, diagnosis, and treatment options including Western Medicine. She also offers her opinion regarding alternative treatments for skin cancers and nutrition for healthy skin and supplements that may be beneficial for reducing future skin cancers.
Vitamin D is another hot topic with a wide range of opinions about the optimal dose for good health. Vitamin D in its active form is one of the most powerful hormones in the body. Vitamin D deficiency is common in the Northern hemisphere and supplementation for the vast majority of people is important for their well-being. Dr. Simpson explains how important it is not to take too much vitamin D and to make sure that your serum calcium is not high enough to lead to other health issues.
When I read the chapter on sunscreens, I ran to my cabinet to check the ingredients in my products. Unfortunately, the products I have been using are not safe for me nor for the environment. There is a handy section on ingredients to avoid and the best ones to use.
The section on skin cancer provided a good understanding of the types of skin cancer and the importance of checking your own skin for possible skin cancers. Her section on skin examination and treatment options for skin cancers are valuable additions. In addition, she shares her own experiences regarding incorrect skin cancer diagnosis and treatment options.
In the final chapter on Circadian Rhythms she delves into the importance of light itself to set our internal clock and to be in sync with the planet on which we live. Sleep disorders are common, especially in women and especially as we age. The practical advice in this chapter will help many who have sleep issues.
Dr. Lani s No Nonsense Sun Health Guide is full of useful information and practical advice. It even included a detailed description of the best clothes and hats and sunglasses to minimize sun exposure! And what I found particularly appealing was that her explanations and advice were thoroughly researched, summarizing studies that support different opinions regarding several of the subjects she discussed, and then providing her own well-thought-out opinions and recommendations. All in all, Dr. Simpson has written a well-researched and highly accessible guide for anyone interested in how to incorporate safe sun exposure into their life in order to optimize their vitamin D levels without triggering skin cancer or getting burned.
Jennifer Schneider M.D., Ph.D. is a physician specializing in Internal Medicine, Addiction Medicine, and Pain Medicine. Dr. Schneider is the author of 13 books and multiple medical articles. She has a particular interest in bone health and osteoporosis after sustaining an atypical femur fracture (AFF) as a result of prolonged bisphosphonate treatment. She now helps patients who have sustained such fractures.

Introduction
My first encounter with skin cancer involved outpatient surgery to remove a small growth from my forearm. Later another carcinoma was excised from my back. Then, soon after my third skin cancer diagnosis in 1999, I participated in a five-day silent retreat at Spirit Rock, a meditation center in northern California. It was winter, and after ten straight days of wind and rain, the sun emerged into the background of a perfectly blue sky.
To celebrate this gift and to shake out the days of sitting and struggling with a very active mind, I set out for an afternoon hike. The air was clean, fresh, and unusually w
