Preface
Diabetes mellitus, one of the most important complications of pregnancy, can cause a wide range of problems during pregnancy for women and their developing babies. The prevalence of types of diabetes in pregnancy has been dramatically increased in the last years in all the world, and this is due mostly to the increase of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and of obesity that is a very high risk factor for the development of GDM and type 2 diabetes. Optimal health care before and during pregnancy is mandatory to prevent birth defects and other health problems, and to reach this aim, a multidisciplinary approach is of major importance.
This book is published with the objective of providing a comprehensive overview of the clinical characteristics/features of types 1 and 2 diabetes in pregnancy as well as GDM. To reach this aim, the focus is on up-to-date information on physiopathology, diagnosis, autoimmunity, genetic, omics, management, and treatment. This has been possible through the contributions of health-care professionals and academics who are expert in the medical and scientific problems of diabetes and its influence on pregnancy and its outcome.
The editors hope that the reader will gain insight into the complexity of diabetic pregnancy and its treatment as well as pregnancy complications.
It has been a great honor for us to collaborate with so many authorities in this field; their expertise and enthusiasm have contributed largely to cover all the main topics related to diabetes in pregnancy.
Finally, the authors would thank the efficient staff of Karger Publisher who actively participated in this project.
